Came in today, turned the radio on and the last track being played by Ken was Run For Home by Lindisfarne...love it.

Steve has just played Morning has Broken by Cat Stevens...or should we say Yusef Islam?...a beautiful, beautiful sound.

(I see he is called Yusef/Cat Stevens on Twitter)

Coincidentally I played Cat Stevens' Greatest Hits CD last night and was reminded of how nice that song is. Rick Wakeman is on piano.

Have to admit I don't like Lindisfarne's Run For Home. Why don't they ever play Meet Me On The Corner or Lady Eleanor?

Heard the Lindisfarne track Becky! Being from that part of the world I like them all and still have my original vinyl Fog On The Tyne! We had the Newcastle Journal yesterday and it seems they (not sure how many are left?) are doing their traditional Christmas concert at the City Hall later this week. It used to be on for about 5 nights and all sold out!

Friday's track for me was Low's 'Just Like Christmas' played on Drivetime.

Saturday's was Gene Pitney's 'Town Without Pity' on SOTS.

I always think of Gazza in connection with that song,Helen. Very Happy

I've just mentioned a Gladys Knight song in another thread ...loved hearing another of hers today on Jeremy's programme - Baby Don't Change Your Mind.

Torn between 2 today.

First one was Harry by Catherine Howe on Michael Ball, became a favourite of mine after hearing it numerous times on Terry Wogan over the years.

The other one is Afternoon Delight from Starland Vocal Band near the start of Claudia's show. Can't recall when I last heard that one but it's an early recollection from Radio 2 listening for me, probably in the days of Adrian Love in the Afternoon.

I like Afternoon Delight, it must be said.

I've also always said that no matter how old the music you hear is...if it's for the first time, then it's new. To you, at least. I love to hear things that I've never heard before.

Like on Sunday night, when I switched the radio on, while in the kitchen. Clare Teal played this request. I was charmed straightaway. I just love it.

I Don't Want To Play In Your Yard - Peggy Lee.

Funny you should choose a Peggy Lee,Raver. Today Barry Cryer chose this one by Peggy as one of the Tracks Of His Years. It always reminds me of my eldest sister...a bit of a family joke. Very Happy

If that was put on the turntable following Afternoon Delight, I think I might be mortally offended, Becky...

Moving on swiftly...I thought Barry's choices were most agreeable, along with his witty banter.

If only they had a Radio 2 extra, like Radio 1 does...which doubtless, nobody listens to...he'd get his own show, along with Leo Green. A crazy notion, maybe, but seeing that they've got this ridiculous pop-up Country channel on, over a few days, maybe not so. Then there's the Eurovision one that will be popping up in May, no doubt. If they're not for minorities, then my name's David Jacobs.

And yet SOTS is on at 6am. How many million listeners a week..? I think they're secretly hoping most people won't bother to listen again, or are to senile to remember.

What was I saying..? Oh yes, David Jacobs. I liked this. A hit.

Edit: Just to keep on topic, my TOTD. Arguably the best one chord song in history.

Everyday People.

I wondered if you'd be listening when I heard it, Becky. Anita Rani also chose Martha, a few weeks ago.

It's a fair case for suggesting that women have better tastes than the men...

Surprised

It's you I have to thank,Raver, for putting me onto that beautiful song, many years ago on Exile's Exiles....was that what it was called?...when the Radio 2 music board shut down.

Ever since then it has been a firm favourite of mine. Smile

I heard a couple of choices of Anita Rani ...one that reminded her of her Dad...but not that one.

Samantha Womack has chosen some lovely songs this week. Songbird by Fleetwood Mac today...love that.

And yesterday...this gem. Cat Stevens at his very best...

No doubt about the choice for me today

'One Road' by The Love Affair from 1969 played on POTP - why is this track played so rarely on British radio compared to their other four well known chart tracks?

Such a little gem unknown to most people Sad

Yes, it never gets much airplay, does it. In fact, I bought a Best Of a few years ago, just so I could own it.

He played We Are The Moles yesterday. I remember when that came out, with all sorts of speculation about who it was. The Fabs were the most common guess, but it was never them. You could tell that, just by listening to the vocals. Years later, it turned out to be Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, later to find prog fame, in the form of Gentle Giant.

He also played Mary Hopkin's version of Goodbye, which I bought, as a boy...and managed not to talk over it (I think). But three shows in, and he's getting on my nerves a little, with his inane waffling. More Arnold!

I think you might be getting a bit confused raver - the track I referred to was played by Gambo not TB

I do take the points you make though Smile

You're dead right, Ruddles. I'd forgotten that I'd listened to POTP after SOTS...I even remember thinking that Gambo should be doing SOTS while Tony went back to POTP. And that the BBC are doing everything they can to appease Cliff, by playing that dreadful Good Times Better Times single from the 1969 charts...

I usually have the football on at that time, but there wasn't any. Chances are, I'd have got it mixed up with rugby.

Yes, I get confused these days between SOTS and POTP and between Gambo and TB. But I am easily confuseable anyway.

1969 has got to be the best year for music and I enjoyed POTP yesterday, with Sorry Suzanne by The Hollies, a great pop song. True, there was the appalling Cilla Black and the aforementioned Cliff atrocity, but the wonderful First Of May by The Bee Gees, plus Peter Sarstedt's classic and Marvin's Grapevine, more than make up for the rubbish.

Have to say that I will never listen to SOTS (a) as a protest against Radio 2's despicable contempt for the previous show and for 60s music in general and (b) because it's too bloody early. But looking at the music played it does seem rather good, with fewer silly 1961 obscurities!

Glad to know I'm not alone in my confusion then, Schiz. And even gladder that First Of May rates highly with you. 1969 was a magical year for music, without a doubt. The previous few weren't too shabby, either, but for me as well, 1969 has a special place.

I skipped the Cilla and Cliff...and bought Sorry Suzanne, Grapevine and First Of May at the time. Not sure I bought many more singles after 1969. Get Back and Honky Tonk Women, spring to mind. The silver Motown Chartbusters LP contained all those lovely Motown singles from the year, too.

One of the best albums ever IMHO, mine must be almost worn out! The first of the Chartbusters series was a good one as well.

Old Raver, a few years ago Channel 4 did a programme on the number one singles of 1969, such was the quality of chart toppers that year: Honky Tonk Women, Get Back, Ballad of John and Yoko, the wonderful Something In The Air by Thunderclap Newman, Blackberry Way, Albatross, Grapevine, Bad Moon Rising, and so many more. And The Beatles' Come Together/Something didn't each reach the top!

Oh hang on, there was R**f H****s and Two Little Boys as well.

I've always held the view that 1969 was the best ever year in music and I completely agree regarding the tracks already mentioned - 1967 and 1968 weren't bad though Smile

I have to confess to never having heard that before, Becky. I listened to it last week, after reading your post - and was instantly smitten. I could have said wonderful, but that might be seen as a painful pun.

Not a track of the day, but more of a track that ruined my day. R2 have just played a duet by Gary Barlow and Elton John.

How can they legally do this, yet don't allow euthanasia..?

Totally soppy but 'Happy Easter and Easter Parade' duo played just now on Elaine Page. It's not Easter until I've heard Easter Parade.
