Just seen an advert for an autumn tour for the John Wilson Orchestra. This time it's a Celebration of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Rodgers and Hart. More info here http://www.johnwilsonorchestra.com/tour/
Also I see this year his prom is very early in the season, No 2 on Sat 14 July, and is Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady.

Thanks Helen. I wonder if the Prom will be televised live or shown a few days later. |

I'm not sure Eileen. Usually Radio Times publish a pull out booklet which indicates which ones are live. It shouldn't be long before that comes out so I'll post as soon as I get it.
I think last year's was broadcast the following weekend. I'll record it live from Radio 3 though.

John Wilson's Broadway Prom (which features songs from shows and Seth Macfarlane as a singer) is on Monday 27th August, and broadcast on BBC Two on 1st September:

I think the other Prom linked above will only be on Radio 3. |

Thanks for that Ian!
I didn't really search the Prom programme as such as I was looking for more info on the tour.
The Lerner and Loewe prom on 14 July, isn't going to be televised so it's Radio 3 or nothing. The Broadway Prom will be something to look forward to though!

Eileen do you like Ivor Novello?
If so there's a Celebration of Ivor Novello prom, which is televised.

I love the Leap Year Waltz from the Dancing Years and several other of his compositions.

Yes I do Helen, thanks for that, tho I had actually noticed it. I love some of his songs as long as the sopranos don't have too much vibrato and sing the lyrics clearly . |

I thought it was hugely enjoyable and that it came over really well in sound only. I'd love to have seen it televised but I wonder if you listen more carefully to the dialogue when you are not distracted by seeing the action.
Anyway, a lovely production . |

I was only able to hear the first hour so I'm glad I've recorded it. Really enjoyed what I heard. It's also repeated on Tuesday afternoon at 2.30.
Eileen I've always thought you take in far more from a radio broadcast than one from TV. I have R2 recordings of The Dancing Years and Salad Days from probably 15 or more years ago and they were and still are superb to listen to. Strangely Alan Titchmarsh played 'We Said We'd Never Look Back' from that production on Melodies For You a couple of years ago.

This was a delight from begining to end ...as soon as the overture began I was lost in this wonderful musical.
Such a pity it wasn't televised
Alun Armstrong (Alfred Doolittle) is currently appearing as the Duke of Northumberland in the excellent The Hollow Crown with his son (Joe), in real life, playing the part of his son, Hotspur.
Thanks for posting about it,Helen...might have missed it otherwise. |

Glad you enjoyed it Becky! I've hopefully got a fee evening later this week so I'm looking forward to listening to it.
There's something about an overture isn't there? It had the same effect on me.
I've just been online and booked tickets for the autumn tour at the Bridgewater Hall in November. I looked last week at their own site and there were only a few seats left in the gallery but I googled 'John Wilson tickets' and ENTS24 had some much better ones, so I've gone for it.
I've always wanted to go the Bridgewater but never got round to it. I used to park my car on what was known as the 'bomb site' when I worked in Manchester about 15 years ago. Feel quite excited now!

Have a wonderful evening Helen. When tickets actually arrive it somehow brings the event nearer and builds the excitement.
Our Charley's Aunt tickets are on the kitchen shelf ready for next Tuesday . |

It sure does Eileen. I was a bit worried as I'd not used Ents24 before.
You probably won't remember but I tried to get tickets for last year's tour using the Bridgewater Hall site and there were about 6 single seats left, scattered all over the hall. Well it was the same when I tried back in June so I thought it wasn't to be. After the My Fair Lady Prom I thought I'd try again and just googled 'John Wilson 2012 tickets' and Ents24 came up and, voila, 3/4 of the seats in the auditorium were still for sale! So we've got good ones.
I just wish I'd done it last year as I really loved the music from the Hollywood Movies. You live and learn!

The concert was absolutely fantastic, just wish it had lasted longer.
A selection of Oklahoma opened the proceedings followed by some Rodgers and Hart songs, Kim Cresswell sang Lady Is A Tramp. Then some from South Pacific ending the first half with Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.
Second half opened with the Carousel Waltz, then If I Loved You sung by Julian Ovenden and Annalene Beechey. Sound of Music followed and Some Enchanted Evening. You'll Never Walk Alone ended the second half.
June Is Busting Out Allover was the superb encore to the last performance of the tour. He could have gone on until midnight if the audience had their way!

Helen, it sounds absolutely wonderful! Kim Cresswell and Julian Ovenden are terrific singers and you were so lucky to have seen (and heard) them.
I can just imagine the audience shouting for more. Long may lovely John Wilson continue to give us this great music. |

They are, I'm just so mad at myself for having missed last year's tour now!
Enjoy Charlie's Aunt tonight Eileen, I was looking for the thread where you mentioned it.

Helen, it's in the Theatre section. We're leaving by car in about an hour so as to be seated for our meal in the theatre restaurant by 6.30pm. We have to be careful to avoid the London congestion charge so it needs careful timing and route planning! |
