I'm still looking to trim that price a bit.. the 3 year old kitchen we have here in our "old house" was the subject of many arguements, particularly the worktops! I was determined not to have black sparkling granite tops at £3k+ Shocked

After a few months, we hardly look at them anyway! Rolling Eyes

The builders are still here!!!

It's been one of those days. It all started off so well. The kitchen fitter arrived, the plumber arrived, the conservatory fitters arrived and two of the regular builder chaps arrived. We are just a few short weeks away from being finished. The plumber drilled through one of his own pipes behind a beautifully tiled wall while installing a shower....water everywhere! A few tiles off: a big wet hole in the wall until Monday when the tiler can come back. The kitchen fitter noticed that the wrong sized vent duct has been installed - no biggy until you remember where the vent duct runs and how much work is required to put the right size vent duct in. It runs behind the garage ceiling, which is double layered fire board under new plaster: it was only done last week for the second time because they used the wrong type of insulation first time around- then had to take it down to replace that: third time lucky? The conservatory chaps noticed that the cavity trays are in the wrong place and will have to be redone. Nothing is finished, although my nerves are fast heading that way. On the upside at least one of the neighbours is willing to grunt a hello when we walk past, the others, I think, are one more van away from litigation- they've had our local councillor around complaining about vans.... there was 14 of them for a while last week and the week before.
I said to the councillor, "Robin" , difficulty in parking??!!!! You should try making 23 cups of tea with a 3 litre kettle!!!

Working on our places all the time, I read your post with interest and can imagine the situation all too well, but your comment about cavity trays in the wrong place sounds serious if they are cavity trays...
Cavity trays are built into a cavity brick/block wall to throw condensation away from the inner leaf of the wall to the outside and through weep holes in the brick joints to the outside... normally used over conservatories or other ground floor works. Lead flashings are used in the outer brick skin built in below the cavity trays...
If they have to move the cavity trays... Confused

Sounds to me Rach like the building of Hadrian's Wall must have been a minor construction job compared to the work being done on your house

Looking back at when your building job started here in Chester they've completely finished the construction of two large warehouses in roughly the same timescale so I can well imagine how frustrating the whole thing must be for you - but I'm sure it will all be worth it in the end Smile

It's been an epic adventure- I may write a book about it. I'd never do it again though.
It is the cavity trays Santa, they have to be cut out and re-installed two courses further up- the builders made a mistake in measuring.
The fan ducting also has to be changed, they've installed 100 mm: it should have been 150mm- the garage ceiling is coming down as I type. On the upside, the showers are all installed - although the one that had the leak cannot be used until the tiler redoes the tiles that had to come off.

Only 5 vans today.

I'll post some before and after pics when it's all done. In the main it's all quite nice and gone quite well but it takes over your life- it becomes your life!

It sounds like the stuff of nightmares.
When it's all finished, and perfect, you'll be able to sit back and relax, and laugh about it all..... while you're miles away on holiday!
