It seem Global have bought Smooth Radio and Real Radio Networks for an estimated 70 Million. The original offer was 50 Million, but Bauer who runs Metro, Magic networks name but a few - put in a bid for the sale of GMG - but were picked to the post by Global. It doesn't look good for some as jobs were lost during the Heart and Capital merger. Time will tell what will happen to the core part of Real and Smooth Radio over the coming months.

This is at least 10 day-old-news Mark. The issue here is not the loss of jobs (that we can safely assume will happen) but the continued retreat of localised broadcasting into "national broadcasting with a local logo". The whole thing is dispicable and we really should be rattling cages against OfCom - a regulator that really doesn't care a hoot.

Here in Milton Keynes we have a so-called "local" radio station that's just a boring and bland breakfast opt-out (I call it the "him and the bimbo show") - and that to me is not proper local radio. The irony is that we have 6 community stations who can any a 30-day RSL once a year if their lucky. In he USA a city the size of ours would support 10 or more truly local stations.

I really, really hate corporate radio such as the total crap we get from the present national brands, but very soon that's all we'll have. We must stop the rot before it's too late - or start up pirate radio stations and risk prosecution just to make a point (as Ronan did back in '64).

What I'd like right now is a decent and viable alternative to that idiot Evans in the mornings, but alas it's going to be a long wait.
