Squatting set to become a criminal offence.

If amenity bills and rent wasn't so high then maybe we wouldn't see so many squatters. Breaking into someones house is against the law. |

Seems like the perfect solution to their accomodation problem. Break into an empty house, get arrested for squatting, free food and accomodation in a warm prison cell for a year.... it's win win! |

That's exactly what I thought when I heard of the law! I think we'll now see an increase in squatting..... |

Does the police jail squatters? An't our prisons full? What happens once they have been charged? Throw them onto the streets again? Blame the Government as they have reduced Local Housing Allowance for private rents for those on benefits.
It still against the law to break into someone house and occupy it. Do we see this happening a lot or just commercial buildings? |

Good job too... I've never been able to understand how it can be "legal" to take over somebody's property and be allowed to stay there! completely ridiculous situation... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Mark you seem to be under a slight misapprehension here
Breaking into a property is and always has been a criminal offence
However if people squat in a property as of this evening by getting in through an open window or unlocked door then that is a civil matter which needs to be resolved through the County Court
I do think that the Government is right to make squatting a criminal offence but this action needs to be supported by making available more hostels and social accommodation for those displaced by this new law
My worry is that people will continue to squat and risk prison because prison may be a better alternative to ending up on the streets so really I agree with what Rachel said earlier _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

This new law favours property owners - especially those likely to vote Tory - while doing absolutely nothing to resolve the critical problem of homelessness in the UK. In fact, it's just what I'd expect from Cameron and his cronies.
