As a 12 year old I remember how excited I was in late 1967 about the start of Radio One
However like many others the excitement was tinged with a little bit of apprehension after seeing how my favourite 'pirate' stations were driven to extinction by the then Labour Government - probably one of the early things in my life that made me dislike the Labour Party as I still do - was the new station really going to cut the mustard in the way the likes of Caroline and London did?
However I needn't have worried as right from that first play of 'Flowers In the Rain' it was obvious that the new station was quickly going to become an institution in the homes of teenagers all over Britain which ir did for many years and I vividly remember rushing home fro school in the late 60's so I wouldn't miss a minute of the teatime show - as it was called in those days
Sadly I think today's radio one is a pale reflection of those early days with a fairly low audience share and a very limited playlist in terms of musical history and I don't think it will ever repeat those heady days of the late sixties and early seventies after the BBC had finally realised in the year of the Summer of Love that pop music was here to stay
Just to digress slightly apparently Simon Bates has been receiving large numbers of e mails from new listeners who have deserted Radio One at breakfast following the departure of one Mr Moyles - so it would appear that some former Radio One listeners cannot stick breakfast on Radio Two just like the majority on here _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
