Whilst Ken takes half term off - Claudi is covering from week 29th October. No more Zoe unless she's off with her kids.

I expect Zoe is quite busy doing the strictly thing every evening. Not everyone likes to work 24/7.

Oh God no. Not bloody Claudia bloody Winkleman. She's even worse than Ball.

She's turned the once great Radio 2 Arts programme into a shadow of a shadow of it's former self.

What actually is a Claudia Winkleman anyway? I mean, what is she there for?

"Claudia Anne I. Winkleman is an English television presenter, film critic, radio personality and journalist."

Journalist is stretching things a bit, but she is Eve Pollard's daughter.

She does have a brain, but it rarely sees the light of day through all the hair and mascara. She was OK doing the Strictly thing that ZB now does but Film ** and the Culture Show - a disarster, darling

Thanks Ron. One of the advantages of knocking on a bit is I don't keep up with modern culture (I've never seen Britain's Got Strictly No Celebrity X Factor). Radio presenter? On which planet, I wonder. The bit about Eve Pollard explains it all though

I've never actually seen her on telly so I don't know what she looks like. The I saw her photo on the R2 website. How appropriate that she's on during Hallowe'en week

Well she sailed through Popmaster without a hitch, except that her radio voice and elocution is such that the contestants had to ask her to repeat names, or whole questions.

I missed it today: shopping. I heard some of the show in the car- the bit where Jezza came on...

I'm feeling quite woosy- the builders let an acro-prop topple over,it bashed me on the head as it fell, it didn't seem that bad at the time- big girls don't cry and all that- but now it's throbbing..... afternoon in bed I think....

I like Claudia as company but it's a shame Gary Bones saddled her with the same dreary dross as he gives Ken.

Me neither. Are you sure you shouldn't get checked out. At my age I'm allowed to nag, or so my wife says

I don't recall anyone getting zero. Ken usually contrives to get at least three points

I was desperately hoping Gary Bones would be on holiday with Ken.
Then the second record played was Maroon 5 as per usual, my heart sank.
Saying that, I never think the music is as bad as when Ken Bruce and Gary Bones are together.
I actually quite like Claudia and used to like her on "It Takes Two"

I don't think Ken would want to go on holiday with Gary Bones!

It really is time Bones had a holiday though, so we could all look forward to some better music. Today with Claudia it was the same old pop disco--Lionel bloody Ritchie etc. And as for Maroon 5...
Trouble is neither CW nor the dizzy blonde would want to rock the boat and say 'I'm not playing this crap'. Which makes me wonder why Ken doesn't say the same as he clearly doesn't like the stuff he has to play.
Retirement, big pension looming I suppose.

Does he really dislike it though?
I don't think it would rock the boat to say "Come on Gary we are on Radio 2, don't you think the majority of listeners don't want to hear the same records everyday"
I honestly think that should be the duty of the DJ, not to just turn up and play whatever the producer picks even if you think it's rubbish.
I can understand the stand ins not saying anything, but Ken is on there week in week out and keeps on playing the same few records all the time.

I think Ken likes his 60's Motown and even a bit of prog rock. He certainly said live on air about a year ago: 'I think we've had enough of this pink music', yet Bones doesn't get the hint. Radio 2's remit is, or should be, to attract and retain listeners in their 40s and upwards. Proper, adult music that has substance, that's what the listener wants. KB, who's probably never said or done anything controversial in his life, should really stand up for his beliefs, instead of being a pathetic BBC puppet.

I agree with you entirely Schizoid.
I've got nothing against some cheesy music or some modern music etc but his show is ridiculous.
Take the show on Friday, Maroon 5 as the second record yet again, Robbie Williams for about the millionth time (though thankfully not "Candy" again), Bruno Mars, Carly Rae Jepson, CeeLo Green for about the millionth time etc.
Surely that's not the kind of music Radio 2 listeners want day in day out?
As I've said before the only time they play anything older is if there is a couple of minutes leading up to the news and only an old record will fit.

You lot amaze me. With the millions upon millions of audio listening choices out there in the galaxy and you stay with the same rubbish on Radio 2. Why not do what I do and ditch the drab old station in favour of other worlds? Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to tune in - and if you do still tune in then why complain?

I rarely listen to Ken Bruce. I merely looked at the 'music played' on the website.

But those songs are on the playlist - all non-specialist shows will have to play them whether they want to or not.

My issue is with stuff like (from today): "Dreadlock Holiday" by 10cc, "Lessons In Love" by Level 42, "Take It On The Run" by REO Speedwagon, and "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie. Not necessarily bad songs but incredibly dull and overplayed. And just kind-of samey.

Quote:

But even that's become the most repetitive part of the show - there's only about 10 tunes getting inserted into the slot. Cheesy fun once, but torture now.

It’s pleasing to know that we amaze you, Colin… it’s not our goal in life obviously, but a nice by-product nevertheless. Some people are loyal listeners, you see, R2 is part of our life: that warming life-affirming feeling when we first turn on the radio and it’s the last remnants of Alex’s show is confirmation that all is well in the world, nothing really bad has happened whilst we slept, the world is still turning, then a cheery Vanessa pops up to let us know that the day has begun. The station is our friend; we choose to spend our valuable time with the various R2 Shows because that is what friends do. They spend time with each other. You should try it instead of cherry picking your way through life. Friends … real proper friends, tell you when your dress looks like a sack, likewise with Radio Shows- if it’s not that great, only a real friend will let you know in a nice way. A nudge here, a wink there and yes, very occasionally, a minor complaint.

My head is much better today, thanks,Ron and Number Six: the bump has very nearly gone, I slept through from 2pm yesterday until 4:45 this morning. Sleep cures most things. I feel great today.

Sorry Rachel but that's utter nonsense! I have real friends - the sort I go out for a meal with or meet up down the pub for a pint on a Friday or Saturday night. The voices that come of the radio and which are heard introducing (mostly) boring music on Radio 2 aren't friends, they're merely voices. Yes, I cherry-pick my way through life because that's what life is for - sampling the many things that life has to offer not giving all my time to imaginary friends!

The simple fact is that, for me, Radio 2 is a mess, and that's why I listen to very little of the station's output these days.

So why come on here? Is this one of your cherries? Do you get off on this place?

What amazes me is that a sane person who doesn’t listen much to Radio 2 because there is so many other really great listening choices available out there, would spend his time complaining about the output of Radio 2 on an internet forum with half a dozen or so regular members he doesn’t know. What do you hope to achieve?

It seems like you're just angry because you can't do as I do and listen to R2 every waking moment. Enjoy your cherries!

I was under the impression that John set it up as a forum for open discussion about the station in general - the good, the bad, the ugly. If he didn't, then what is an open forum? Why does it exist? Is it only for the purposes of offering up our undying praise to the great network that is BBC Radio 2?

As ever you miss the point of the question. Yes it's an open forum but if you don't listen to R2 how can you discuss it ?

Again, that's utter nonsense. A forum is a forum for discussion and debate about all aspects of the broad topic or focus of such a forum. And, unlike you, I wouldn't be listening to a radio station every waking moment of my life even if it were 100% perfect......

No "as ever" about it. I did mention earlier that I "listen to very little" of Radio 2's output these days, largely because what I do hear when I randomly tune in isn't to my liking. Simple.

So I do listen - just not a great deal, that's all. That, I would assume, qualifies me to post in this forum does it not?

Not really.

I think it would be fair comment, to say about someone (anyone), who tears themselves away from their busy life of friends, eating out, no doubt while reading their beloved twitter feeds and listening to wonderful radio, to spend valuable time posting “complete twaddle” on an internet forum for discussing a radio station that by their own admission, they hardly listen to, as an idiot. It’s the stuff of madness.

To talk about R2 and how "cool beans" it is. Anyway you can't leave the forum, it's on the interweb- it's everywhere! Even on your iphone. Pop in for a second bite or third bite even, any time you feel like it. Smile

I agree with Rachel, I've grown up listening to Radio 2 and feel a great affinity towards it.
I think we have a right to complain about a certain show if we want to.
As I've said before Colin, we listen to Radio 2 at work and can't just keep chopping and changing stations all the time.
Radio 2 should be a station for older people who have a diverse taste in music and I really don't think Ken Bruces show caters for that group at all.
The other shows have to play playlist stuff too (way too much as well in my opinion) but also mix in some other stuff too.
The Ken Bruce show is just an excuse for Gary Bones to play his favourite songs over and over again.
Take this morning, first record played:- the dance remix of "I've Got Life" by Nina Simone.
He must have played that hundreds of times in the last 5 years, WHY????
Surely Nina Simone must have made some great records in her career that can be played rather than that one, every single time.

The clue is in the title The Radio 2 PRESERVATION Society and there is very little preserved of the Radio 2 that I used to love listening to on every radio around our house. Now I just dip in and out, with favourite presenters that I will always listen to, some presenters I can put up with, others I can't stand and that's when I dip out! Each to their own, it wouldn't do for us all to be the same! Very Happy

I basically agree with Colin on this one but I have to say that I think it's rather childish to 'take the proverbial ball away' simply because others happen to disagree with any particular view - stand and fight your corner - that's what I say Smile

And I'm not only saying that in the case of Colin - the same applies to Rach and Gaz and Angela and everyone else who posts regularly on here

It would be a very boring forum if everyone was of the same mind so people really do need to chill out and that's probably not an expression many of you would normally associate with me Shocked

I like Nina Simone / Groovefinder's 'Ain't Got No I Got Life', though it would be beyond the halfwit Gary Bones to choose Nina's 1968 original (from 'Hair') which is even better.
Still, at least we've not heard Leo Sayer's Thunder In My Heart or Starship's We Built This City on KB's show for a couple of weeks.

But this forum isn’t the Radio Preservation Society, Angela. It’s just a forum attached to a website of that name, it could just as easily have been attached to a web-site about Australian Tree-Frogs or Irish Dancing if John had been into those things at the time. This forum, as I recall, was very kindly set up by John in very short order to replace the Radio 2 Message Board when that was closed down, and a brilliant job he did. John invited anyone who wished it, to continue their discussions about R2 on here. The forum has a very similar format to the old R2 MB: other than the logo it has little, indeed, nothing to do with the preservation of R2. Being a member of the forum doesn’t mean that one agrees with the aims of the R2 Preservation Society- many people joined here after being invited to do so, to do nothing more than continue their discussions which would have otherwise been on the old R2MB.
I know that most people who came under John’s invitation, went again, but I’ve stuck around- off and on: for me, the purpose of posting here remains as was originally intended. To talk about R2. Very Happy None of this stuff is worth worrying or getting upset about though. Tis just chit chat and friendly banter. Smile

I think you'll find that John refers to it as the Radio 2 Preservation Society though Rachel or I'm sure he did in a similar discussion to this.
