Tony Blackburn announced on Ken Bruce show he will hosting a show Live on New Years Day at 2pm. A show which plays songs which were number 2, and never got to Number 1.

Oh Vienna... sigh
It's gonna be Ultravox Vienna. It was number two forever- or it seemed like it, but then again the track feels like it lasts forever. It means nothing to me.
Anyway Tony might not be available on New Year's Day.... I hear the fashion ploice are getting through their enormous backlog , they've just finished the 60s, so any time soon, Tony may be arrested for having worn a really bad shirt during a 70s TOTPs Show. You know the one with the frills... it was all a bit too Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. |

Have just voted.
I went for Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever which will surely win if common sense prevails. There again, common sense seldom prevails when the British public get to vote.
I see Aha's Take On Me is there. I expect Jeremy Vine who plays it every day will use his influence. |

Well for me the choice was quite difficult
I was very tempted to vote for Sparks track 'This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us' - a superb track and one which we used to play almost every night when I played in a covers band in the mid 1970's
And then I noticed on the list the track 'Sit Down' by James - a track which was written in the kitchen of the Windings Recording Studio in Wrexham which was run by my former business partner Max and where our independent record label was based
However at the end of the day I felt I just couldn't let down a group of wonderful musicians I've followed since 1988 around the local pubs and clubs in South Wales so it probably won't surprise any of you that my vote went to the Manics

a difficult choice indeed.. normally I'd have gone for Strawberry Fields / Penny Lane too but I had a sudden leaning towards My Generation...

Yes, it's now called Jools Holland's Hootenanny, which manages to achieve the distinction of being even worse.
Devotees of the original can find its successor on BBC Scotland.

Oh I like Jools, Ron, although I've never seen his hootenanny. I gave up on new Year's Eve years ago after realising at an early age what it's all about :- lots of people crowd into pubs and clubs having often, bought a jolly expensive ticket for somewhere you can, on any other night, walk in free, they all get completely car parked, then at midnight, sing a song they don't understand while playing a strange game of mass twister, before waiting three hours for a ride home in a vomit filled taxi, which costs three times the normal rate. I think, in bed with Tony on radio 2, is going to be a much better night all round. There's positive!  |

I'm usually doing a gig on New Years Eve so very rarely get to really enjoy it but I do remember some great ones spent in the Highland Hotel in Fort William - everyone should celebrate the occasion in Scotland at least once in their life - it's a unique experience

Jools Holland's music is fine. His sycophantic presenting style leaves a lot to be desired, though. At the Hootenanny, which is pre-recorded, the guests are clearly out of their comfort zone when it comes to New Year cheer and expressing what they wish for in the future.
I'm with you, Rach, on the New Year's celebrations in the city centres - once bitten (a long time ago), twice shy. Also a long time ago the party at a friend's house - similar results just slightly cheaper.
In more recent years we have been enticed out a few times to rather more plush and expensive hotel or restaurant dos, where the service resembles a conveyor belt and the food tastes as though it was cooked a long time ago and brought back to scalding by being zapped in a microwave. Where the live band or disco actually misses the stroke of midnight cos they're halfway through Dancing Queen or Hi Ho Silver Lining. At least there's no danger of anyone getting drunk at these occasions because a visit to the bar requires an application for a mortgage.

My perfect New Year’s Eve would be spent in Cornwall and would start at about 07:30 with a freshly baked baguette, stuffed with free range crispy bacon and lots of Ketchup, washed down with a cup of green tea with two spoons of unrefined sugar. 08:15 – a long walk on a winter sun drenched beach – just me and Hooby ( he’s a dog) while Hubby ( he’s , well, my hubby) reads the paper and does the crossword. 11:30 – out for lunch- nothing too heavy…. 14:00 :emerge from the pub/restaurant to a beautiful sunny but quite cold winter afternoon, incoming tide, gentle sea breeze, 2-3ft of spilling surf. On with my winter wetsuit – then wander down to the beach to launch my surf canoe, paddle out past the beach surf – keep going right out and go around the back of St Michael’s Mount where, not for the faint hearted, there is some quite fantastic open sea surfing to be had as long as you remember to steer clear of the lethal rocks just inches below the water almost everywhere you look. After a few hours of living right on the edge of certain death- call hubby on the radio to let him know that 1. I’m still alive and 2. I’m on my way back. Then it’s wash my canoe and put it away for next time, followed by the Silver Tuna of the day- a steaming hot shower, taking off my wetsuit in the process. Slip into something comfortable- jeans and t-shirt, have dinner- steak chips etc etc…. then snuggle on the sofa in front of the log burner and telly for a few hours before heading off to bed for wild sex then falling asleep in hubby’s arms while listening to Tony B on the radio- wake up on New Year’s Day……

Have had a look at the list and am left wondering how on earth can I choose between Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane and Waterloo Sunset????.....if pressed it would have to be an eeny meeny miny mo moment ....I remember spending a few days in mourning when SF/PL failed to hit the number 1 spot
I was surprised to see Please,Please Me on the list ...Wiki (?) says ...
It is a common belief that "Please Please Me" was never a Number 1 single in Britain but on 22 February 1963 the song reached number one on the singles charts compiled by the New Musical Express (the most recognised chart at the time) and the Melody Maker where it was Number 1 for two weeks. It only reached number two on the Record Retailer chart, which subsequently evolved into the UK

It was a tough decision not to plump for Waterloo Sunset, Becky, as it would be in my top ten of all time. But Penny and Strawberry is/are as well. Two of the finest examples of the individual genius of Paul and John, and both with Liverpool and childhood themes. John's finest moment, perhaps. Ray Davies at his very best, too....you really need the wisdom of Solomon to pick one. There are so many wonderful songs on the list, that it seems unfair to only be able to choose one.
I thought Please Please Me was a number one for most of my life, until someone decided otherwise. Still gives me goosebumps when I hear it start. I also would have thought that the NME and Melody Maker would have been the font of knowledge of these things. Still, it makes for an even better programme on New Years Day.

Only one of the tracks will get that coveted no1 slot. |

One of the benefits of having a really late night on New Year's Eve is that you don't wake up in time to hear things like early morning news bulletins which in this case is a definite advantage
I'm thoroughly enjoying the show without the slightest idea what will be at Number One but as Rach says it must be really annoying for the artist who ends up at number two for the second time
It reminds me of those contestants who get invited back on Golden Balls having had their money stolen the first time round only to have the same thing happen again

| No mistake ! The Number 1 was mentioned in a brief report in today's Daily Telegraph. This is a case ( again) of marketing over listeners interests. R2 and the BBC does not care about established listeners. The Beebs PR department obviously put this out. They think we will put up with poor playlists, celeb presenters etc whilst they do a spoiler like this ( dressed up as news)to get new listeners and boost the listening figures. RA did not know what to say to Tony Blackburn this morning during a conversation with him about the programme and sounded a little embarrassed. TB had obviously not heard the 8.00 am broadcast when the result was revealed ! |

I was very happy as all three of my choices from a few weeks ago made it into the Top 40 including a very creditable result for James at number four - great to see The Sex Pistols in there also
I have to admit to being slightly surprised at the Number One track as I would almost have put money on The Beatles achieving the top spot
I'm a great fan of Ultravox but I actually think that Vienna is one of the worst and most boring tracks they ever did - I can't help thinking that the result might have been influenced by the R2 trailer over the last few weeks inviting listeners to take part because if I remember correctly Vienna was one track which featured prominently

| Vienna probably made it to number 1 because it was beaten by Joe Dolce. Many of the others were number 2 to very good records - not Rolf Harris or Jimmy Osmond though. |
