What a terrific career he had, as creator of Journey Into Space, Oh What a Lovely War!, producer of so many documentaries on diverse subjects, radio producer of the Goon Show, Take It From Here etc.

Not a name I'm familiar with,Eileen, but he is talked about (we also hear him talking) by Gillian Reynolds and David Jacobs on this week's Last Word on Radio 4.

Last words about General Norman Schwarzkopf,Lord William Rees-Mogg,Sir Richard Rodney Bennett and Christopher Martin Jenkins feature too.

Thank you very much for that Becky. I missed the programme and have just listened to it.

I have looked out for his name on radio programmes since the 1950s when I was a devotee of Journey Into Space. My best friend actually wrote a fan letter to him re JIS and received a very nice personal reply with a photo of Jet Morgan & Co., which she still has! I am trying to alert her to the repeat of Last Word which is tonight.

I first heard of Charles Chilton a few months ago, I think, on one of the many good documentaries on BBC 4. He told his story on it, but damned if I can remember what the programme was called. I'll be sure to alert you, Eileen, if I find that a repeat is scheduled.

I think it might be The Story Of Light Entertainment, though I find the story of how he grew up, left school at 14 and got a job (eventually) at the BBC very familiar, so could have been another docu that featured him. He's in this one from time to time...his contributions start at 3.50 into this clip.
