Alan Titchmarsh faced a furious backlash today after suggesting women should stop “whingeing” about ageism in television.

The gardener and presenter, 64, reignited the debate over age discrimination in broadcasting when he claimed many women use their good looks to their advantage in the early stages of their careers.

He said: “Men in television tend to last a bit longer at the end of their careers, but it is women who make hay at the beginning. They don’t complain in their early days when they are disporting themselves on sports cars. I’d like to see a mix of all ages on TV and wish there could be less whingeing about it.”

Women journalists/TV presenters disporting themselves on sports cars in their early days????

I think he's getting his models/serious women journalists and women TV presenters mixed up!

I want to see the best person for the job irrespective of age or gender... full stop.

I see he has a new series of his gardening programme starting tonight on ITV ....perhaps publicity, for that, is the reason for his remarks. Rolling Eyes

In my experience women tend to mature much sooner than men but perhaps do not necessarily last the course quite as long as men

Having said that I certainly would never defend sexism in any walk of life including radio and television and I know a great number of so called 'older women' who are far more appealing than their younger counterparts- and most are far more wise and interesting as they have a lot more experience of life Smile

And Alex Jones got her job on The One Show because of her gravitas and ability to conduct an intellectually stimulating interview- oh yeah.......

I don't watch The One Show - Channel 4 News for me at that time of day except on Wednesdays when the R2 Folk Show is on Smile
