I quite like his Sunday evening show. I'll give it a go. At least it's not Zoe Balls-Up. I wonder why Morticia isn't doing it.

I just hope the music will be better than the awful stuff that Ken gets lumbered with.

All the good stand ins must be on holiday. Michael Ball is a mistake for two weeks in Ken's slot. School holidays though, so not so many listening.

A slightly odd choice, but probably better than ZB.

He seems to be at a loose end this summer, apart from a gig at Audley End on 4th August.

I think Claudia will be in Edinburgh as I'm fairly sure the Arts Show will be covering the Festival and Fringe up there at that time.

I think Claudia has gone away with her husband, something to do with his job. Heard her talking about it but can't recall where.

Michael Ball is awful! He's challenging Steve Wright for Biggest Ego on the air - nearly every text is about how brilliant he is. Bloody hell, I think I'd rather have Zoe going on about her kids...

I like Michael's show on Sundays and was really hoping( against hope) he would be bringing his producer with him.
Sadly when I heard " Stop it don't stop it" or whatever it's called and the dance remix of "Thunder in my heart" from Leo Sayer, both for about the millionth time my heart sank.
Somebody should tell Ken Bruce's producers that Radio 2 should be a service for the public and not an outlet for them to constantly play their favourite songs all the time.
I honestly can't believe that the people in charge don't ever look back at what songs are played on shows and keep the producers in check.

I did warn you: a couple of days, fine, no problemo. 2 weeks, big mistake. I'm availble next week, if you can stand that much ELO. No fee. The good news is Test Match Special starts tomorrow, blowers aggers and co, lots of cake and the occasional pigeon.

Was that you playing that soundcloud tune Rachel?
It reminded me of some of the tunes you used to get on the spectrum/c64 years ago.
Can't get it out if my head now lol

It is yeah, gazmando, it's quite a long story but I'll give you the short version. It's a tune written by my Great Granddad about 1895 ish. My Great Granddad was quite a musician: published, a proffesional. He won awards. My mum has one of his awards. My mum is going to give the award to whomever (in our family) comes up with the best arrangement of the tune. My mum wants lyrics too, which the original never had. That was my first go at doing the tune, I've not started on lyrics yet.. Annoyingly, on soundcloud it sounds nothing like it does in our studio, this is because we recorded it digitally in midi but soundcloud doesn't take midi files, so we had to convert it using a free web service converter, into mp3. It sounds pants, so we're investigating buying our own conversion software, so we can do everything here at home and hear the result as others will before banging it out. If that is still not like it really sounds then we'll do it the old way. Also I'm giving soundcloud a go as a bit of a test/trial for the next name that tune series.
I'm hoping to win, so I can give the award, to my much more talented brother. He's not talented in music but I don't think that should matter.

Blowers, for one, is positively obsessed with them! Very Happy

He was talking about them (for a change) to Glenn McGrath oblivious to the fact (until Glenn told him) that his nickname is 'Pigeon'! Very Happy

There should be bets placed on how long it is until he mentions them in his commentary! Very Happy

I'd never previously listened to TMS, Becky, the last two Tests were my first experience of them. The cricket seems incidental, to the cranes, pigeons, cakes and seagulls. I was so bowled over by them that (being a bit of an impressionist)I hurt my throat really quite badly doing blowers just for a bit of fun.It was a good impression though, my hubby thought I'd recorded it from the radio. I might post it but probably shouldn't. Very Happy

I used to enjoy TMS in the days when there was just one jolly old fool (Brian Johnston) and the incidentals were less and the cricket more (so we're talking of the days of Arlott, Gibson, Benaud and Swanton). Of course they had less time to fill-in then, because less time was wasted on the field.

Sadly, I'm told the producers are playing exactly what's being asked of them. Keeping it safe in a post-Sachsgate world.

The big event of today is the news that the pork pies were turned away by security. Aggers is audibly vexed.

Yes, it started with a cake, and now they need one of Asda's articulated lorries to accommodate all the food they get sent.

I'm not surprised they turned away the pork pies - wrong county.

TMS is still first and foremost about the cricket with coverage and analysis, of the highest order, from the experts.

The incidentals are, imo, a delightful listen and do not detract in any way from the serious business.

Long live TMS!

(Apologies,Mark, for going off topic)

Oh he was, it was funny, especially the updates on where they were throughout the day. They let the man with the trumpet in though but not the pork pies. No blowers. Sad

Very good shows so far sitting in for Ken this week.

I thought he could be a contender for taking over Bruce on Strictly Come Dancing?

He is still unrelentingly awful. From the egotastic stories, texts and music (he played his own song FFS!) to the laborious pissing about with Popmaster it is a chore from beginning to end.

The poor sod doing Tracks of Their Years just has to listen to Ball's anecdotes every day: ("I've picked this song because..." "Yeah, well I met him and sang with him and you didn't and it was brilliant ha ha ha")

I can't believe there's no-one better.

I've heard a couple of the shows this week (I won't say "listened to" because it was just there in the background) and I have to agree with Ian. He's just "OK" as presenters go but I find it strange that there's absolutely nobody who might be described as a talented, professional broadcaster available for the two weeks that Ken is - predictably - off with the wife and kids during half-term!

I've not heard much this week either, for various reasons, but it just goes to show how few good music presenters there are. There used to be hoards of them that could be called on when someone was sick or on holiday.

Not a good sign Sad .

I have to agree they don't seem able to find many good standins.

This week hasn't been good but it could have been far worse with some of the others we've had to endure, or switch off.

Haven't listened at all this week and won't be doing so next week

With the loss of Simon Bates on Smooth breakfast and the inane items featured on the JV Show these days - like are animals racist Rolling Eyes - not to mention the increasingly irritating Steve Wright the only daytime show worth listening to for me has been Drivetime - and even on that I notice that next week we're stuck with a man imported from the Republic Of Ireland when there are plenty of up and coming British broadcasters who could and should be given a chance

I simply despair - mainly because by stock of CDs in the car are rapidly getting worn out Sad

Remembering when Hubert Gregg had his Thanks For The Memory show. CDs to him were always referred to as 'Shaving Mirrors'!

To be honest, it could be anyone sitting in for Ken as long as the awful Gary Bones is choosing the music.

Unfortunately Michael Ball is so desperately dull, so lacking in personality, that I really prefer the rather smug Ken Bruce whose wry sense of humour I like.
Perhaps Michael Ball isn't as dull as Richard Allinson (that would be an achievement) but he really is insufferably devoid of character.

I had hoped that the musical choices would improve in Ken Bruce's brief absence, but with the appalling Gary Bones still 'producing' the show it has, if anything, been even worse Rolling Eyes
