The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy after going into labour this morning.
The baby weighed 8lbs 6oz and was born at 4.24pm, the palace said.
The official notice of birth has left St Mary's Hospital and is making its way towards Buckingham Palace.

Congratulations to the happy parents. Great news.
Er ... Mark, well done, you were about 40 minutes ahead of the official announcement which was at around 8.24pm. Did they tell you first? .
Oh hang on, it's John clock confusing me . |

I placed a small bet today on the baby being named James as his first name
Should buy me more than enough champers to 'wet the baby's head' if I get lucky _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I think it'll be George or Arthur.
They seem like a really lovely couple don't they. |

Good luck with your bet,ruddles...Kate's brother's name is James, isn't it?
Last time I heard George is the favourite with James a close second....Wayne is the rank outsider.....King Wayne?...perhaps not |

Just a pity we had to have the dire patronising waffle of a commentary filling the time before it, at least it was drowned out by the cheers of the crowd |

... but wasn't Simon McCoy great? I loved his comment which went something like: "We'll bring you the news as it happens even if there isn't any ... but that won't stop us!"
I do like his sense of humour. |

On the news at lunchtime it said that the Queen had visited the new baby at Kensington Palace and that she had stayed for 34 minutes...detail like that I can do without! |

Oh well - sadly my bet was unsuccessful but I think I can just about afford to lose a fiver
What a boring choice of names anyway - there have been two King Georges already in the last hundred years so why on earth go down that road yet again
We haven't had a King James for around 300 years and it would have been refreshing to see something a bit different - or as my son said how about a King Ruddles or a King Toggy - after all we've had an Emperor Rosko (although admittedly he had an American accent0 and a King Midas in Reverse - there again perhaps that might be a step too far _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I seem to remember that they don't have to use their name when they become king, so Charles doesn't have to be king Charles, anyone else heard that ? |

I don't know if they can pluck one from the air on a whim, nod, (that might be reserved for Popes ) but Queen Victoria was born Alexandrina Victoria and Edward the VII was born Albert (known as Bertie by his family and friends throughout his life) Edward so perhaps they can,if they wish, choose one of their other names when they are crowned.
I saw this article the other day, from 2005, regarding Prince Charles.
Prince Charles wants to be King George
Prince Charles has discussed rejecting the title King Charles III when he accedes to the throne because of its associations with Britain's bloody past, the Times newspaper says.
"There have been many conversations with the Prince about this. It is an assumption among us all that it will happen," one of two unnamed "trusted friends" is quoted today as saying.
The other was quoted as saying: "They (the royal family) will decide at the time, but he has talked about George."
Prince Charles - whose full name is Charles Philip Arthur George - is said to favour the title George VII when he takes over from his mother, the current Queen Elizabeth II.
George VI, who died in 1952, was the Queen's father who took over unexpectedly after his brother Edward VIII abdicated over his relationship with an American divorcee.
The Times said the move away from Charles stems from its associations with Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649 following the English Civil War at the start of Oliver Cromwell's short-lived republic.
The executed monarch's son, Charles II, spent 18 years in exile and returned to Britain in 1660 but was nicknamed "The Merry Monarch" because of his string of mistresses.
Charles is also associated with the Catholic Bonnie Prince Charlie, an enduring Scottish romantic figure, who claimed the throne in the 18th century.
A spokesman for Clarence House, Prince Charles's official London residence, was quoted as saying: "One of the questions that we have asked is what he (Charles) will be known as. The decision will be taken at the time."

I thought they can pick a name they want. After all, wasn't Edward VIII's name David and George VI was Albert.
Trouble is when I hear His Royal Sprogness referred to as Prince George I keep having a mental image of Hugh Laurie _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

They were discussing it on JV yesterday I believe. I didn't hear it but it sounded like they were suitably disgusted by the OK magazine headline.

Yes - the disgust was quite rightly almost universal and the magazine has been forced into an apology
Interesting to see that the power of social media like Twitter can now in certain cases take on the mainstream press and put one over on them as I gather the Sun was planning to run something similar - no great surprise there _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Yes...good to know enough people were disgusted with their attitute to her post pregnancy stomach (1day!!) that they let their feelings be known, forcing the apology.
I'm assuming OK is staffed mainly by women who you would have thought (some of them anyway) would not have been so ignorant on this subject. |

At least this labour has had a very positive result. I'm surprised that Ed Millibandwagon hasn't cottoned on to the virtues of labour _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. |

My late father, who liked riding, rode on Aldaniti a few times at the gallops at Findon on the South Downs prior to the 1981 Grand National!
Yes, it was a nice story, with Bob Champion who had just recovered from cancer. |

I hope things go as well as they can for for Kate, seeing as she has the severe morning sickness she has had before. |
