British Gas Owner Centrica is reportly to offer free power to customers on Saturdays to encourage energy use demand is low.

Nothing is never free. Obviously this is a way to try and calm down the complaints customers have been saying for years. I guess it'll be rolled out across all energy suppliers once it's been looked at? One thing - it'll wont stop price increases.

Once everybody has been given a "smart" meter (it's scheduled to take another seven years) they will be able to vary the cost on a daily or time of day basis according to demand and supply conditions, unless you are on a fixed tariff.

Low cost power during off-peak times is nothing new, of course (Economy 7 from the old days of the nationalised industry - which is still used, although I have noticed, in my research for our impending house move, that the benefit of that is often outweighed by a higher daytime cost than if you are on a single tariff)
