Calls for HS2 rail project to be scrapped 'as costs will reach £80bn'

The cost of the HS2 rail project could reach at least £80bn, almost double the current estimate, a report has found.

_______________

Money could be spent on current infrastructure also on the NHS and trying to get people back to work. It's becoming a white elephant.

The Government just won't take note of the independent bodies which are warning against this project. So few people will benefit from it if it ever comes to fruition in the 2020s and it seems to make far more sense to improve existing routes, stations and trains.

Homeowners along the route even at quite a distance from it are seeing their properties losing value and are unable to sell. Although more tunnels are planned, it will still destroy precious wildlife habitats and I believe I heard a quote some time ago from someone saying that an area of ancient woodland could be "moved" successfully!

I think HS2 is bonkers, and will benefit too few. Anyone using it to travel from London to Birmingham will arrive at the office 20 minutes earlier (having left home same time) so how is that worth 80billion pounds?

It's all the 'new planned' tunnels that will create havoc up to 20 miles either side of the track construction as heavy lorries drive around to find the locations to dump all that soil!!!
