Last night I had a couple of old friends staying with me- well when I say 'old' they're a bit older than me but I've know them for many years and both are huge music fans with a special love of sixties music and indeed Bob my friend's brother used to work for the well known songwriter Barry Mason who wrote many famous hits of the era and who still lives quite near here in the Wirral
Over dinner quite naturally we were talking rather a lot about sixties trivia and the topic of banned records came up and Roger's wife in the course of conversation suggested that the track 'Hold On I'm Coming' by Sam and Dave was banned in the early to mid sixties because of the obvious suggestive title and lyrics but I don't ever remember this and certainly I'm sure I recall it being played around the time Radio One started in 1967 by presenters like David Symonds and Emperor Rosko and later by Johnnie Walker
I made the comment that I didn't really think that the idea of banning sertain tracks on radio really started until the well known example of Je T'aime closely followed by tracks by the likes of Max Romeo and later Judge Dread but before that I really don't think the idea ever crossed the minds of people in charge of British radio - although I know the was a recent history of certain bans across the pond in the USA
I was somewhat reluctant to argue with two people whose knowledge of the early sixties is probably better than my own but I've checked on line and can't find any evidence to support the suggestion of a ban on that particular track
Do any of you sixties buffs have any thoughts knowledge or recollections - you need to help me out because we had a little bet and there's a very nice Chinese meal resting on this _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles?

My schoolday band used to play Sam & Dave's "Hold on I'm Comin'" and I heard it on the radio a lot. I certainly don't remember it being banned Ruddles... and if it had been, that was the sort of thing we would have talked about a lot - so I think you're right! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
I have heard how radio should be. |

I remember it being played a lot on Radio 1 so I think your friends have got their wires crossed Ruddles!

Wikipedia says that radio stations objected to playing 'Hold On I'm Coming' because of the suggestive title. But there never was an official ban. So it seems you've earned your free Chinese! |

Yes I checked the same thing Schiz and found exactly the same as you
I think there may have been some bans in America as a result of pressure from the sixties equivalent of today's 'Tea Party' but as you say never an official ban - and certainly not in Britain
Ive left it on the basis that unless my friends can come up with some positive evidence to prove a ban in Britain then I win the bet - I'm already looking forward to my meal at a lovely restaurant in the Lake District - they do absolutely superb garlic sea bass _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Definitely enjoy your meal - can recommend the Glasshouse in Ambleside (other restaurants are available) - I have got old reel to reel tapes of Fluff's Sunday afternoon Pick of the Pops and it's played on there - no BBC ban then. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

Banning broadcast of songs, for 'innuendo' reasons, goes back to the early 1930's. Things like Billy Cotton's 'I've Gone And Lost My Little Yo-Yo' come to mind, the tune was recorded by comics too, and the most notorious record issued by Harry Roy, 'My Girl's Pussy'.
You can listen to them now on youtube. _________________ -

There was an issue over Chuck Berry's "My ding-a-ling" as well, I recall - although that might not have been until the mid-70s. I hated it! |

Well many thanks for all your comments - seems like my friends have somewhat of a problem
The meal isn't happening until early February so they've got until then to come up with evidence to support their theory which it is now quite apparent is a fairly impossible task
With John's permission I intend to submit a copy of this thread by way of evidence in support of my case
looking forward to that garlic sea bass already even though we've got Christmas and New Year before that _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Do we get to share the contents of the doggy-bag, Ruds? (assuming there will be anything left over, that is!) |

Well of course Colin - you don't really think I'd forget people who have helped me do you?
I'll save you a nice bit of sea bass and I'll send it by same day courier so you can enjoy it nice and fresh - and I'd echo the famous words of Basil Fawlty - 'go and have some fun with a fin' _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
