Today mine is Make Someone Happy by Jimmy Durante...a lovely song but this version is my absolute favourite of it.
The first time I remember hearing it was at the end of Sleepless in Seattle
It was one of the choices of Dame Elish Angiolini this morning on Desert Island Discs
(She is the first woman to become both Scotland's Solicitor General and Lord Advocate just in case anyone is wondering )

My track today is Old and Wise by The Alan Parsons Project, with a beautifully dreamy vocal from Colin Blunstone,one of the choices of Professor Hugh Montgomery on Desert Island Discs.

| The Bob Harris programme was one of the best I've heard for ages. It is a real shame that music tracks have to be cut down, but never mind. Anyhow, for licensing reasons they're cut even more on the podcasts. |

Took me a while to find this thread again but I was sure I wasn't dreaming it up!!
Anyway I just heard Elvis' 'The Girl Of My Bestfriend' on Smooth which I've not heard for absolutely ages and it's one of those tracks for me.
Speaking of Smooth their music seems to have got better since the format change.

For me Planet Rock was compulsive listening this morning when Wyatt played a very rarely heard Uriah Heep track 'Look At Yourself' which I haven't heard anywhere on radio for at least 30 years - I'd forgotten just how good it is
Shortly afterwards he played ;In The Court Of The Crimson King' one of the greatest tracks from the best year in music 1969 soon followed by a rarely heard Deep Purple track the title of which escapes me right now
With such gems on offer why on earth would anyone want to suffer listening to John (Mr Boring') Bishop

Ruddles, I couldn't agree more. Oddly enough, Ken Bruce played the same King Crimson track the other day, too. I was quite surprised!
Like you, I find John Bishop's radio presentation insufferable and Saturdays between 10.00 and 1.00 have long been a no-go zone for me. Stations like Radio Caroline and Planet Rock are a much better alternative to the Saturday morning banality and waffle on R2. |

Things We Said Today is one of my favourite Beatles tracks. Steve Wright is the only person who plays it and maybe Richard Allinson.

From memory it is band 1 on side 2 (or is it says she??) of A Hard Day's Night LP and I think the 'b' side of the single. I never had the single as I got the LP for my early August birthday and I think they came out at the same time (I've a memory like an elephant for some things as well.  )

I have a good memory for 1960s-related events in my life, largely because I link everything to Beatles releases! |

Helen: 'Things We Said Today' was in fact track 3 of side 2 of A Hard Days Night. I think it's a wonderful album with no bad songs. 'I Should Have Known Better' is one of my favourite Beatles' songs.
I saw the film in August 1964 with my mother, when I also bought the LP which I still have.

| Ken Bruce did indeed play In The Court Of The Crimson King about three weeks ago. I was staggered and it made a change from the usual bland disco pop rubbish he plays. Though I have to say hearing it on radio doesn't sound as good as full blast on a good stereo. |

It must be down to a period of summer madness on Radio 2
Yesterday Johnnie Walker played a very obscure track by Uriah Heep called 'The Easy Road' from the 1975 album Wonderworld - a typical Ken Hensley ballad type offering very untypical of the artists concerned and not even that well known even to fans of the band
I was absolutely delighted to hear it but it did rather beg the question in my mind as to why Mr Walker together with most of his colleagues failed to play virtually ANY tracks by Uriah Heep on Radio One in the early to mid seventies when the band wasat its peak and had many thousands of fans including me
Perhaps it simply proves that we 'Heep' fans were ahead of our time - apparently by about 40 years

I know nothing about Uriah Heep but it's good if JW plays some relatively unknown album tracks. My main gripe with SOT70s is that he plays too many chart singles (T Rex, Sweet, Eagles, Blondie) which we've all heard before and not enough album tracks.
JW spent much of the late 60s and early 70s championing albums as opposed to singles. He should do the same now. |

Yes, and me. I saw the band several times in the 70s. They were poorly represented on radio - even on strands like "Sounds of the 70s" and John Peel's show.

Agreed. It also supports my view that Radio One was pretty crap really - especially the daytime/early evening output. And Top Of The Pops might have represented chart music but the charts did not represent the breadth of music being produced - and toured. |

One of my brothers-in-law has lots of family in Australia and one of them (a brother) does a stint as a DJ on a local radio station every Thursday evening.
He played a request for me today...If I Fell by The Beatles...so that's my track of the day without any question.

Becky, "If I Fell" is my favourite Lennon & McCartney song. I adore it (yes, I'm a soppy git deep down). I remember my mum being persuaded to take my younger brother and me to see A Hard Day's Night at the cinema in Plymouth and that song just leapt at me (well, I could just about hear it through the screaming of the pubescent girls, anyhow!).
Then, after the end credits played out, the projectionist put the record on the in-house sound system - and from that day it's been very special to me.
What I find staggering is how two guys in their early 20s at the time could write such a beautiful song. If it were a one-hit-wonder it would be a classic - but they wrote hundreds of brilliant and timeless songs. Amazing! We'll never see their likes again.
PS: My 12-year-old grandson loves The Beatles. His favourite song is "I Should Have Known Better" He either has good taste or he's been brainwashed from an earlier age by me! |

It is a beautiful song,Colin,and is high on the list of my favourites from the lads but as you well know they did so many that I'm not sure I could ever say that it is the absolute one.
We (friends and sisters) used to have parties to celebrate each new album as it came out from the lads and we never ceased to be amazed just how consistently good (fantastic!) the songs were.
I admit to having a little scream when I saw them live in Blackpool but it was always the music first and foremost ...obviously didn't hurt they were good looking young men.
My granddaughter, just turned 7, is a fan of them and last Christmas had all her class (with the teacher's blessing) singing Come Together. You could say she has been somewhat influenced by her Daddy and me.

Some friends of mine do a show on a local radio station, and I took my grandson into the station while they were on air. In between records they were asking him what music he was into (thinking he would only acknowledge the current "dub-step" and mix styles) and when he mentioned The Beatles they were surprised. Then, when the mics were open, they included him in their chat and asked him what his favourite Beatles song was. Thinking that he'd say something like "Yellow Submarine" they were dumbstruck when he said ""I Should Have Known Better". They were even more surprised when he then described the scene in which it was featured in the film!
And, of course, they had to pull up the song from the system and allowed him to announce it. His mum (my daughter) was listening and she couldn't believe it when she heard her son - who was then only 11 - talking on air! He took it all in his stride. |

Obviously a big fan and knows what he's talking about as illustrated by his knowledge of where his favourite song came in the film. What an experience for him talking live on air- could have been that talking about The Beatles and their music made him forget where he was!
It must have been lovely for your daughter listening to her son,at that age, on the radio.

After seeing your post,Helen, I went back to have a listen to them sing it live, as I like that song.
The second one they played was a request from Gary Bones .....Fifteen Summers ....and what a beautiful song it is.
Have never heard it before and probably would never have if I hadn't listened again, so thanks!

I've always liked Gallagher and Lyle, ever since they wrote the brilliant McGuiness Flint songs 'Malt and Barley Blues' and 'When I'm Dead and Gone' in 1970/71.
I first came across them as a performing duo in 1973 on OGWT when they performed two brilliant songs, 'I Believe In You' and 'Layna'. Next day I bought the album Seeds.
'Fifteen Summers' comes from their 1976 follow up album Breakaway. |

Completely agree about the two McGuiness Flint tracks you mention Schiz - both are sheer class and make great use of the mandolin - rare on pop tracks apart from those by Rod Stewart

Worth a listen on iPlayer Radio is this week's "Desert Island Discs" on Radio 4. Computing scientist Dame Wendy Hall has some lovely stories to tell and makes some interesting musical choices - the very first of which would be my Track of The Day for Friday - "Things We Said Today" from The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night". Her recollection of the era is one I can perfectly relate to! (And Helen, too, no doubt!)
I would have chosen a different Emerson, Lake & Palmer track to "Fanfare For The Common Man", as I would the track representative of Eric Clapton ("Layla") because I would have chosen one of his many blues numbers but it was her show not mine. But at least The Beatles achieved two inclusions in the short list.
It's funny how "Layla" is credited as a Clapton release in the Playlist when in actual fact it was Derek & The Dominoes (as he himself as emphasised in interviews and performances). But hey...... here's the show:

Heard the programme in the car yesterday having missed the introduction and it had me wondering who is this lady? - these choices are so good
Despite the difference in gender her childhood background was very similar to my own but it really brought the point home as to just how difficult it was for a woman to pursue a scientific career back in the sixties
I agree with Colin that a couple of the choices were a little predictable - rather than Layla I would have gone for something less well known such as 'Let It Grow' but as has been mentioned it's her show
I had to laugh when at the end of the show she wanted to take Wikipedia with her - had Kirsty allowed it I reckon the show would never have been broadcast

I must listen to Desert Island Discs!
I heard the request from Gary Bones for 15 Summers and it's obviously his like of the duo that means they get a fairly regular airing on Ken's show.
It was neighbours of ours in Newcastle who introduced me to their music and I know I had a recording of theirs from I think the Royal Albert Hall that was on radio circa 1978 on a reel to reel tape. I think 15 Summers was on that. I don't know if I ever copied it onto a cassette or if I still have the reel tape. I must investigate later! I wonder if Gary has it???

I think you'd enjoy it,Helen ...it throws up some great songs!
Guy Garvey from Elbow is the castaway tomorrow. He has a programme on a Sunday afternoon on 6 Music and plays some good music so I'm looking forward to his choices. |
