I was sad to hear of the death of the remaining half of the Two Fat Ladies today

Clarissa was a troubled soul for large parts of her life but also achieved a great deal being the youngest ever barrister to practise in England and Wales and of course by getting involved in cooking at a time of her life when she was stoney broke as a way of making ends meet

Whoever teamed her up with Jennifer Patterson was an absolute genius - I just loved their traditional attitudes to life and cooking and their refusal to embrace the politically correct age in which they were operating

My only gripe about Clarissa was her high profile support of foxhunting - something which I have always opposed but despite that we've lost yet another 'larger than life' character who rather like the Hairy Bikers never set out to be a professional cook but who simply had the personality to make cooking exciting Smile

Yes Colin - and I'm not simply a 'cut and paste' man but in fairness to Mark I don't think he normally employs those methods on this particular thread

I'd far rather post original material if only out of respect for the deceased

I think a thread like this one definitely requires it Smile

Think she had a troubled childhood as well. Remember her being on JV years ago talking about it.

More sad news, there is a lot of it about. Sad

I read her autobiography a few years ago and to say she had a colourful life would be putting it mildly.

She was born into wealth but her father, who was a surgeon to the royal family, abused both his wife and family verbally and physically. He was an alcoholic so this might explain Clarissa's struggle with it in later life.
She inherited over £2 million pounds when her mother died but depression set in soon afterwards when she lost her father too and she spent the following 12 years lost in a world of drink.

It is a huge credit to her that she eventually got the better of the drink and made something of her life.

A real character ..she was always worth a listen to even if you didn't always agree with what she was saying.

R.I.P

Clarissa Theresa Philomena Aileen Mary Josephine Agnes Elsie Trilby Louise Esmerelda Dickson Wright.

That's going to be a hell of a job for a stonemason to get that lot on a gravestone ...

I've only just read her obit. If that's anything to go by, then I might well search for the autobiography, Becky. A brilliant mind, for sure. Rest well, Clarissa x

Thanks for the reminder Becky, I had a feeling it was abuse from the father that she talked about on JV but it was a very long time ago.

Strange how some interviews stay with you, or bits of them anyway.

Off topic but another was a woman who had to play violin in Auschwitz to avoid death. That was amazing, again a long time ago on JV. They don't seem to get the likes of them anymore.........

My copy of it was from the library,Raver, otherwise I would have gladly sent it to you.

It really is an autobiography to read!

You're welcome,Helen.

I think, not 100% sure, there might have been a film made about the lady you mention.

I like Clarissa and was sad to hear of her passing. I also read her biography with interest, tough life she had in her early years.

I wouldn't describe it as "very sad news" to most people who didn't know her.
