I was genuinely sorry to read this a few minutes ago. I worked as a student placement on a production called "On The Move" which Bob co-presented for the BBC back in the mid-1970s. The BBC Education series was designed to support the new national Adult Literacy initiative, and given that I was studying educational film & TV production I was chuffed to get the (unpaid) gig. I didn't get to speak to him much but he was evidently a really nice, down-to-earth decent bloke who seemed to be liked by everyone on the production team.
The next time I was aware of him was when he played Arthur Parker alongside Gemma Craven who played his wife Joan in Dennis Potter's delightful "Pennies From Heaven" in 1978. And then, of course, he gave his all as George in Neil Jordan's "Mona Lisa" in 1986 - one of my favourite films and, for me, Hoskins' best role for which he won a well-deserved Best Actor Academy Award. And Cathy Tyson was pretty darned good as well!!
His co-presenter in "On The Move" was a young drama school graduate called Neil Morrissey, by the way!
