It's not often I find trails amusing but I had to have a chuckle at the one that Mark Radcliffe is currently doing!
If you haven't heard it, he talks about the 'olden' days when you would try to record the top 20 or whatever from the radio or TV using a microphone and tape recorder and of course have to keep silence during the whole thing as that's the only way you'd get the songs. Someone would always come into the room and start speaking, unaware of what you were up to!
Hard to imagine doing it now but it did take me back!

I can relate to that Helen
Somewhere I've got a recording of 'Something In The Air' made that way in 1969 with the sound of my dad trying to separate two cats who were fighting like mad at the time

I remember the cat being shut in the hall while something was being recorded from the TV and continually throwing itself at the door, making a loud thud at each attempt, and eventually bursting into the room. The whole of it was of course captured on the tape for posterity!
Try and catch the trail if you can, it's a good one.

Recently, a client of mine sent down a pile of 1/4" reel-to-reel tapes that he wanted digitising. The tapes were so old he simply couldn't remember what was on them, except that he knew they contained recordings he'd made using his dad's recorder when young. One of the tapes contained a "microphone up to the TV speaker" recording of Top Of The Pops from 1965 or 1966.

My dad couldn't get used to the idea that you didn't need to be quiet when the recording was fed by a direct line input! |

Unlike the current one where that woman wants 'to confide in you' and goes on to have a rant about shop / lift 'muzak'. However much I may have agreed with the sentiments to start with, I don't want her to 'confide' with me any more about it!
Trailer department, please note. It now gets switched off as quickly as an Evans trailer does! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Yes it is the Sheila Hancock one.
My dad used to record POTP (Alan Freeman) on Sundays for me on an old reel to reel tape recorder so I can empathise with the Mark Radcliffe trailer.
Colin: those 1965/66 TOTP recordings will be fascinating as of course most of the shows were wiped. |

That's the one Aitch. It seems that they just do not know when enough is enough when it comes to programme trailers. At worst, it can put people off watching or listening to that programme because the bit they've put in the trailer has been heard (or seen) so much that you don't want to hear or see it again. At least that's how it gets me some times. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I think most of us can which is why I think it's a good one!

They were indeed - due to the high cost of the 2" Videotape Reels. When I was a student in the mid-70s they were £200 a pop.
A former videotape technician at BBC TV centre told me recently that the total stock at TVC at the time was something like 50 tapes! |

There was mention of her hating background music in shops etc to such a degree that she has been known to ask for it to be turned off, much to the embarrassment of her family ...wonder if anyone ever granted her request! |

Well last November I complained about ASDA playing Christmas songs only just after Bonfire night and - yes they did turn the music off
However when I called in three days later it was back on again and I was informed that nothing could be done about it as it was 'company policy' _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

That, sadly, is very true. They're told they have to because it "gets customers into the Christmas spirit" (aka "Brainwashing total suckers into thinking of emptying their pockets", Cynical or what? |

My apologies for letting Helen steal your limelight, Ruddles!
By the way, it's my phone that manages to get me into the pub's WiFi, Rudds! However, I get told off for responding to update pings when I should in fact be paying attention to the love of my life! |

Oh it's OK Colin - we all make mistakes now and again
Your comment about the phone and your better half reminds me of the old joke about the two firiends having a conversation in the pub and one asks the other the question 'Do you ever talk to your wife when making love?' - to which his friend replies 'I do if there's a phone handy' _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
