According to the Pick of the Pops Facebook group there will be a special show on this date.

The show will be three hours long and will feature 1966,1975 and 1984.

Presumably Dermot is off doing X-Factor auditions this Summer. Wouldn't it be good if Saturday afternoons were three hours of POTP then two hours of Richard Allinson?

I'd rather the three hours went to Richard Allinson. His original three hour Saturday afternoon show from about 10 years ago (it doesn't seem that long ago) was a must listen for me. I think two hours is enough for Pick Of The Pops.

1966 will of course be the best of the three: River Deep Mountain High, Paperback Writer, Paint It Black, Out Of Time, Sunny Afternoon etc.

As for 1975, oh dear...there's just I'm Not In Love and the not very PC 'whoa I'm going to Barbados', an excellent song, but I can't see Tony playing it. The rest of June 1975 is just plain awful.

1984's not too bad: FGTH, Wham, Bronski Beat.

June 1975 also included the excellent Roll Over Lay Down by the Quo, but don't expect anything else.

As everyone else has said '66 will be the one I'll be listening to.

Richard Allinson back on a Saturday would be so good. I can remember listening to him while making dinner on a hot Saturday early evening with the door into the garden open and a glass of wine. Perfect summer listening.

Yes, I couldn't agree more Helen. I used to love listening to him while pottering around doing DIY jobs etc., much like I used to enjoy Johnnie Walker's Saturday afternoon show on Radio One. But that was a long time ago!

I've been trying to think who used to follow him as that was also good. Ah remembered now - Paul Gambaccini!

Wonder if we'll hear him again? I read in Paul Donovan's Sunday Times radio column a month or so ago that the hearing (or whatever it was) had been set for July. We are missing and/or losing so many good broadcasters.

I only ever listen to the 60's ones, H, or a 50's one. Thanks to 'Sounds' I checked at lunchtime, half expecting one, as 1967 was two or three weeks ago with nothing decent since.

Another fantastic one yesterday Raver, could do with a CD of the whole chart.......... So many favourites especially Don't Make Me Over and Have Pity On The Boy but I could go on and on!

1966 was one of the best years of the 60s IMHO. I did some playlists for Jason Reynolds', late of this parish and Radio Jackie and Time FM, Sunday golden hour a few years back. I did most from 66 and 64 and Jase phoned me to say he'd never had so many emails for the Golden Hour as he had for both those years!

I don't know if I'm familiar with the Paul and Barry Ryan one, H. I'll find out once I've listened to it. Don't Make Me Over is such a fantastic song,isn't it. Think I have it by Dionne Warwick somewhere. I loved the Swinging Blue Jeans back in the day. Hippy Hippy Shake was one of the thousands of 'Best record ever' in my life. Still love it and it's better (imo) than the fabulous Chan Romero original, which I didn't know of until a few years ago. The Fortunes is another one I'm not familiar with. Lookinhg forward to hearing it inthe next couple of days.

I see Crispian St Peters is in the top five. Another of my 'Best record ever'!

I loved the Blue Jeans too! Their more melodic tracks like Don't Make Me Over and You're No Good were 2 of my faves. I'm sure you'll remember Have Pity On The Boy when you hear it but I don't think it got a lot of airplays, well there weren't exactly many avenues back then were there?

I always say you remember the songs you loved back then much more vividly than those from more recent times as you heard them far less frequently. Similarly with singers/groups from the 60s, their appearences were cemented into your minds as there were no video recorders to remind you just how good they were!

Coincidentally, I got an e mail from the local thearte today and Barry is in a 'Sixties Gold' tour, along with Herman's Hermits, Marmalade (or what's left of them), Dave Berry, Mamas and Papas (?!?), The Tremeloes, The Merseybeats, Gerry's Pacemakers (I'm thinking this may be a medical aid, as I know Gerry Marsden has retired).

But is probably good fun.

Well...I'm honoured to post the first POTP rubbish since the Miley took over the world.

I couldn't help but notice that it hasn't featured any 60's charts for quite some time, so thought I'd check. At least the last 13, including today's and at least the next 8. So it must be new policy to airbrush the 60's from the programme.

Unless they've tendered it out to Serco or someone similar and they've lost the data. Either way, it's a great shame.

I've not listened for ages but noticed the years and decades which didn't make me rush to iPlayer to listen again!

Don't know if you saw Gillian Reynolds' column in last weeks Sunday Times when she mentioned Don Black's final show. I meant to post her exact words but forgot so this is just the gist of it. She was saying that older music seems to have been written off and that music began with the Beatles.

Sounds like they are trying to airbrush that decade away as well.

Radio 2 is not as fond of the past as it used to be. For eight years Don Black has had an hour-long programme late on Sunday nights on which he talked about old songs, some he had written, some he loves, admiring the people who sing them. Last Sunday’s show was the last. Goodbye, Vic Damone, Julie London, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis, Frankie Vaughan. Musical history on Radio 2 now seems to start with the Beatles.

Just copied it from the website, H. I get two free articles a week, but it's been ages since I bothered.

We get the hard copy and the Culture is the first 'bit' of it that I pull out. When Paul Donovan wrote the radio column it was on the last but one page. I used to start from the back! It's nearer the front these days though.

I used to buy it years ago. It would take me the best part of the week to read it! Culture was always the first thing I read, too. I've always read newspapers from back to front, to devour the sports news. Now I read online, I'm straight on the politics which isn't for the faint hearted these days.

I can't remember when I last bought a newspaper. It's a good few years, though. Free local papers and Evening Standard from the local supermarket is about all. But that was before lockdown! Last time I shopped in one was mid March and that was bad enough, with people pushing trolleys full of toilet rolls. I get it delivered now and I don't see that changing at all.

I was thinking the same when I checked the years Becky. I wonder if they are thinking that we've had 2 hours of SOTS so why double up? It's never bothered them before so I wonder if they are trying to phase out the 60s as well..... Perish the thought!

Listened to the '76 year from last Saturday this morning and enjoyed a few of the records played.

Would never have remembered (if I ever knew in the first place) the name of the group who sang Little Does She Know - The Kursaal Flyers.

Have continued emailing Radio 2 asking about Sixties charts on the programme but have just had the standard reply every time, which in effect is no reply.

Looks like that's it for Sixties music on this programme. Sad

It may seem unusual, but early 2000 was an enjoyable time for me. Not least when my mate took me flying for the first time. Two of the tracks that remind me of that occasion are REM 'The Great Beyond' (The one about pushing an Elephant up the stairs') The other being 'Pure Shores' by All Saints. While, not all the tracks might be to my taste, the memories of that time will not leave me. Are they really 20 years ago? Shocked

Both of those are great songs, LEE. That was the year I really got into listening to Radio 2 (having started a new office job) and there seemed to be loads of really good songs around.

I wonder how long we'll have to wait until the next one? I enjoyed it and I can honestly say that I'd never heard that Animals single before.

The bafflement at some of those cheesy Beatles covers making the charts has never faded through the years though. That cover of Girl could curdle milk!

But lovely to get a 60's POTP after all this time. I do prefer to hear a top 20 from a particular week, than a 60's show. simply because it can take you back to a particular time and place, in many instances.
