Thank you for posting this link Mark. I have had a look and there isn't anything much there that will excite me enough to tune in.
I wish we could have some presenters who think the music is more important than them. I do despair, when I think back to how R2 used to be/could be now ............

Junior Choice with Ed Stewart - Christmas Day, 10am-midday
Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart returns to the Radio 2 airwaves to present a special Christmas edition of Junior Choice.
For Christmas morning Ed ‘Stewpot’ Stewart returns with a nostalgic Junior Choice playlist and listeners young and old will be able to get in touch with the show via text, email and social media.

I will catch Fearne Cotton on Billy Cotton.
But my heart sinks when I read on the first line of the preview notes: "...the flawed showman who was loved by millions", as usual the programme will dwell on negative aspects of his personality rather that 50 years of music making.
I expect the first ten years of his band's recordings will be condensed into 3 minutes, and they'll play "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" rather than any of his superb jazzy records from the early 1930s.
And the notes say "the conductor who “just waved his arms about” according to his son" yes well latterly Billy's job was to employ expert music arrangers, but his fans still wanted to see him front the band. Lots of band leaders had to do that.

I remember,years ago,that the hosts on the BBC POV boards were always quick to distance Fearne Cotton from Billy when posters said she was only on BBC radio because of her 'connections' saying they were very distant relatives and her getting her job at the BBC was nothing to do with them.

Craig Charles has been good entertainment when we've been travelling in years gone by so his programme might figure somewhere in my listening.
I'll definitely be listening to All is Calm – The Christmas Truce at some point.
As for some of the others it depends on what time I have and what mood I'm in.

Why the hell should Fearne Cotton present the show just because she is related to Billy Cotton?
Why not get someone who loves his music or is an expert on his life to present it. I hope they aren't trying to get her onto Radio 2, I had the misfortune to have to endure some of her show the other day. I've never heard such excruciatingly bad music in my life, accompanied by her moronic "BANTER".
Will listen to the Glenn Miller programme, I think Len Goodman is a great presenter. The pantomime dame programme should be good fun too. |

Well, I suppose there are a few new things in the schedule to sample.
I'm not quite sure why Christmas is regarded as a good time to experiment with a load of untried novelty presenters.... it would be sensible to blood them beforehand.
You never know, Heston Blumenthal might be a hidden radio talent!
I shall avoid French and Saunders, who have the effect of making me want to do violence to something. |

You could well be right,unclebuck...it's just that his name was a bit of a surprise (to me) when I looked at the listings. |

Good place to start get listeners to Radio 2 used to Fearne Cotton voice then give her a cover show in 2015. Early Breakfast a good start, then over to her Radio 1 show. Sara did it.  |

I wonder what the midweek early mornings are going to be like in the immediate run-up to and over the Christmas / New Year period this year. I remember last year we had Alex Lester (who's own show was extended to cover the early breakfast slot) followed by Richard Allinson. Hearing Alex again before leaving for work took me back 10-15 years and really reminded me what I had been missing and still am. Hearing Richard follow on just showed me the Radio 2 that I have missed so very much for far too long. Sadly Richard has now been dumped, so that part of the equation is sadly unlikely to happen. I also remember that my heart really sank when grim 'normality' was due to be restored

There still doesn't seem to be much choice as an alternative though Colin, especially when you live in a 'not spot' as we do here.

Then the station has shot themselves in the foot. Alex used to cover past Early breakfast until the main breakfast show. What now repeats until then orearly breakfast? |

Richard covering. R2 Breakfast Christmas week apart from Christmas Day. Magic during the festive period usually has shows 6-10/10-2 and 2-6 and miss out Drivetime. Possible Magic for those 3 days prior to Christmas?
Sara Cox is doing Early Breakfast over the festive period and Jo Whiley is covering Ken prior to Christmas.. |
