What a fine keyboard man he was, too, and slips off this mortal coil at too young an age. He'll have a great time at The Great Gig In The Sky, I have no doubt.

A really nice tribute to him by Billy Bragg on The Last Word today on Radio 4. It will be repeated on Sunday evening.

I dug out my copy of Ogdens' Nut Gon Flake last night. His keyboard playing sticks out on tracks like Rene (the dockers' delight). They were the cheeky chappie's of pop.

It was,Angela.
That was a nice song playing at the end of Billy's tribute ...I looked for it on Youtube to hear it in full. It's called When The Crying Is Over from his (Mac's) 2008 album Never Say Never that he made with the Bump Band.

Listened to a couple of others, from the album, whilst I was there....I like!

Brian Matthew on SOTS this morning said he'd do a tribute to Ian McLagan soon.

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is a fabulous album, though I only have the CD, not the 1968 LP, the cover of which was either circular or square, I can't remember. Classic cockney mod meets psychedelia.

I remember talking to my friend, the late Big George Webley (who had a late-night show on BBC London and who created the title music for the BBC's "Have I Got News For You", "The Office", among many other things) a few years ago, who told me that his lifelong passion for music started with his creeping into the back of a Cinema in Tooting as a boy and watching "most amazing band" playing. The band was The Small Faces, and he was hooked. He also told me that he subsequently worked with Ian McLagen on some studio sessions. George had a copy of "Nut Gone Flake" which was signed by Ian, which he used to play very loud!

Sadly, both of them are no longer with us.

I do miss "Big George", I used to enjoy listening to his show on Radio Cambridgeshire on Sunday evenings.
