Can someone tell me who is the idiot covering for Simon Mayo? He's even more annoying than Chris Evans.
Hurry back Simon! |

It's Richard Bacon - he took over from Simon on 5Live when Simon took over Drivetime. Which means Bacon has the rare distinction of ruining two of my favourite shows by taking over from Mayo! |

Isn't he dreadful?
He certainly hasn't improved since he was on last summer. I left it on after SW on Monday, a huge mistake. It would seem the best thing he could think of to get people to get in touch about was what had happened to them since was last doing the programme .
I switched over to Magic with Richard Allinson!

To be fair I don't dislike Lisa, she seems a lovely person. I just find her a bit dull. Still, she is far more bearable than most cover presenters.
I hope Simon is back next week, it does make me appreciate what a damn good presenter he is. |

It would be great to see JW back covering Drivetime for a few weeks per year
I know that perhaps he might want to wind down but he's the obvious candidate for me bearing in mind the fact that he's done the show before _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Mark Goodier, Stuart Maconie, Alex Lester, Bob Harris (Yes, 'Whispering Bob') All the aforementioned have deputised on Drivetime in the past, when Johnnie Walker was away. Why can't they still be used as cover when Simon Mayo is on his holidays? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

To be fair, Culshaw started off as a DJ on BBC local radio before he was doing the impressions. There are at least 2 full-time national presenters who did the same course as him around the same time. |

Glad to see Simon back even if certain of the team are still missing
What an excellent interview with David Hepworth this evening - 1971 was certainly a very good year - to paraphrase Mr Sinatra - but for me not the best ever in music although I can quite see why he might think that bearing in mind he's a bit older than me and as Helen said in her e mail the music appealed to young adults as well as the traditional teenager market
I'm by no means an avid book fan - I just don't have the time - but for me this is one publication I will certainly purchase and find time to read - am I right in thinking that the author used to have a connection with the Old Grey Whisle Test as something at the back of my distant memory seems to be ringing a bell on that point? _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

With the benefit of hindsight, there didn't seem to any one musical genre that ruled the charts in 1971. As Simon said on the show, Slade hadn't yet turned to their more familiar 'Glam' phase (that came in 1972) T Rex were just changing from their 'Ride A White Swan' / 'Debora' phase to their Glam era. There seemed to be something for everyone in that year's charts. A couple of years ago, I got a book about Top Of The Pops which, at the time was it's 50th anniversary. It mentions that, in 1971 that there was an album track spot featured, which I have vague memories of, and which certainly would have added some spice to the show, as this link shows. Some came from well known artists, even if the tracks are not: http://z6.invisionfree.com/popscene/ar/t8674.htm
Shame this wasn't mentioned, I wonder if David Hepworth mentions it in his book. Yes, 1971 did seem a very fertile musical year. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

1971 was not the best year for singles but there were some classic albums:
All Things Must Pass, George Harrison
Sticky Fingers, The Rolling Stones
Who's Next, The Who
Tapestry, Carole King
Every Picture Tells A Story, Rod Stewart
The 'Runes' Album, Led Zeppelin |

Yes, Hepworth worked on the NME before launching Smash Hits, Just Seventeen and Empire magazines, and he also presented the Old Grey Whistle Test in the early 80s and co-hosted the Live Aid coverage. |

Ah Yes Ian thanks for the information - I do recall the OGWT aspect but had completely forgotten about his contribution to 'Live Aid' _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Yes thinking back I remember the albums more than the singles from that year too.

David Hepworth is Johnnie Walker's guest on SOT70s today, if anyone is interested!

The Faces had a good album out in 1971 called Long Player. I just love 'Richmond'. Some great slide guitar on it, and it's one that doesn't have Rod Stewart on lead vocal. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Are there any regular presenters actually broadcasting on Radio 2 this week???
It's crazy to have them all off together. I hardly listen at all now.

I see that Mark Goodier is covering for Simon Mayo on Drivetime next week at least - I'm not sure about the following 2 weeks. He's a great improvement on Richard Bacon. At least I'll be able to listen to what is almost the only Radio 2 daytime show I listen to on a regular basis. |

I'll agree with you about Richard Bacon, I didn't even bother to switch on during his last stint which I hope was his last.

Indeed he is, but don't forget, all the others on my list can easily be called upon to deputise, having done so in the past, two of them currently have regular R2 shows:
Mark Goodier, Stuart Maconie, Alex Lester, Bob Harris (Yes, 'Whispering Bob') And Stuart Maconie did a good job of deputising for Johnnie Walker on Drivetime and he had at least one regular R2 show in those days, the original Critical List, which was a programme about albums with one featured 'classic' with three or four tracks from the chosen album.
And why not give Janice Long some daytime exposure? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Yes - I completely agree
I suppose what I meant to say was that MG is the best option of those Mr Shennan is presently in the habit of using looking at recent months _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |
