The first few announcements have been made about what’s coming to Radio 2 in the next few months.

Cat Deeley will be the immediate replacement for Graham Norton before Claudia Winkleman bothers to start her show. Deeley’s husband, Patrick Kielty, has previously presented the slot so I guess it’s keeping it in the family. Her first guest (on 2nd January) will be Peter Kay

Previously announced, James Morrison presents Top Brass on Sunday nights at 9pm, in which he plays brass music from across the globe. 9pm on Sundays for 4 weeks.

Barry Humphries then replaces Morrison with a new 4-part series of his Forgotten Musical Masterpieces.

Replacing Don Black and Bill Kenwright on Sunday nights at 10pm until midnight is Dr Rangan Chatterjee who “will fuse inspirational conversations with a positive musical soundtrack to help listeners plan their week - and life - ahead with positivity and purpose.” Apparently he has 400,000 followers on social media and “can't wait to bring his honest and easy-to-understand advice to Radio 2 listeners”

From Saturday 2 January (9pm-10pm) for four weeks, Jack Savoretti's Music Without Borders takes listeners on a musical voyage, delving into the music of the singer-songwriters from the 50s to the present day that redefined the musical landscape and popular culture from all over the world. These are the songs that Jack adores from the likes of Seu Jorge, Pino Donaggio, Umberto Tozzi, and more.

Weekday schedule changes:
Vanessa Feltz starts earlier, running 4am-6.30am
Jo Whiley’s Shiny Happy Playlist Mon-Thurs 7pm, then her regular show until 9pm. Now includes the Radio 2 Culture Club reviewing film, TV, music and books.
The Radio 2 Book Club is now being incorporated into Steve Wright In The Afternoon

Shirley Ballas sitting in for Liza Tarbuck on 9th January

Radio 2’s Funny Fortnight returns in February with “a raft of new pilots.” Seeing as there are no slots for actual series I don’t know what they’re piloting but I’m happy to see my pals The Delightful Sausage and Kiri Pritchard-McLean doing one-offs, even if there is no future for them.

Helen Thomas, Head of Radio 2, says: “This winter, we’re looking forward to keeping our listeners warm with a treasure trove of gems, providing a distinctive and diverse range of programming for early 2021. From Dr Rangan Chatterjee teaching us how to live a calmer, healthier life, to taking a journey in Music Without Borders with the wonderful Jack Savoretti, and shows with Cat Deeley, Shirley Ballas and Barry Humphries, Radio 2 has something for everyone.”

Well I don't think their 'something for everybody' will include me in any of that Ian!

I don't know about 'a treasure trove of gems' there is nothing there which appeals to me.

Can't say that there's anything there that will encourage me to listen more.

Big promises there - sounds utter tosh to me, not the programme necessarily but the description of it. Don't think any one hour programme, every Sunday, is going to help plan my week - and life- ahead with positivity and purpose....sounds like a bit of a miracle programme

Also sounds more like a Sunday morning programme.

I will give Jack Savoretti's programme a whirl - singer/songwriter's music from the 50's onwards might be worth a listen.

Will we also be hearing Bill Bailey on Radio 2 after his success on Strictly?

"Something for everyone" doesna't exist. Just like "fun for all the family" doesn't exist,

I noticed that there's no mention of Clare Teal. I listened (the next day) to her final R2 show, with considerable sadness,as she plays great tunes and has a great radio personality.

So...I was made up to learn earlier, that Claire will be joining Jazz Fm for a two-hour Sunday evening show. Starts 24th January.

Yes, sorry, the Claire Teal departure came up in another thread. Radio 2 defended it by saying they were bringing back "Top Brass" in that slot - but that's only going to be 4 weeks.

Glad she's got another show. Once again, the BBC's loss is commercial radio's gain.

Ah yes, I remember it now, Ian. That was an earlier post, wasn't it?

It does seem to be a gradual exodus, while R2 slowly morphs into Radio Bland. I mean, why would you brag about Cat Deeley, Shirley Ballas (2 mentions each!) and...though I quite like his name, as it's like a keyboard exercise, Dr Rangan Chatterjee. I'm happy to say that I've managed to avoid him on social media. And I do follow a few doctors!

All this says to me, is that they don't know what they are and maybe what they want to be. I believe R2 is turning into the radio equivalent of daytime ITV. At least we've been spared the wit and wisdom of the sometime stand-in Dick Madeley. Now there's a prize prawn, if ever there was one.

Gillian Reynolds even mentions that 'old music' has gone from R2 in her S Times column this week.

I was in the bath when I heard his dulcet tones and couldn't do anything about it! Shocked

I shall seek out Gillian's column in a mo, H. Thanks. I see no difference between R2, Heart, all that sort of stuff. Or fluff.

While I'm no fan I'd rather have Madeley than that ghastly Rylan whatsisface. I nearly crashed the car in my rush to switch channels this afternoon

At least when Rylan is on the radio, you're not dazzled by his gnashers...

Well, the only items that lift my spirits are the news that Clare Teal will have two hours every Sunday night on JazzFM and that we have Barry Humphries to enjoy in February. No interest in the rest. I must try to find the piece by Gillian Reynolds. I remember how outraged she was years ago when Russell Davies's wonderful and erudite series was axed.

If anyone is interested you can save the 'all episodes' page from Clare (and anyone else's for that matter) by adding it to your favorites page. I've just checked my Alan Titchmarsh page and it's still available showing the playlists even all these years after he no longer is on the radio.

They can come in handy when if you want some inspiration for Spotify and other such things!

Not surprised Dr Ranj getting the boot, but yet they're bringing in other trendy podcasters no-one listens to. They never learn!

The new weekend schedule is just a mess. How typical of the BBC to have a massive Sounds of the 90s promotion then move the show just as audiences are getting used to it!

Friday

7pm-9pm Michelle Visage

9pm-11pm The Good Groove with DJ Spoony

11pm-midnight The Rock Show with Johnnie Walker,

Saturday

midnight – 1am – documentaries/music genre

3am-4am Michelle Visage’s Rule Breakers

8pm-10pm Sounds of the 80s with Gary Davies

10pm-midnight Sounds of the 90s with Fearne Cotton

Sunday

7pm-8pm Tony Blackburn’s Golden Hour

8pm-10pm Sunday Night is Music Night

10pm-midnight Radio 2 Unwinds with Angela Griffin

I hardly listen these days, but it's not going the right way.

I read a tweet the other day about the new Boom station coming soon which said 'there'll be nobody listening to Radio 2 at all very soon'. I think they could be right!

This latest shambles of a reshuffle seems to me, the sort of decision that permeates right through the BBC of late. The crazy decision to keep BBC 3 and axing BBC4 and R4 extra, when the youth of today don't watch TV in the way we do. So now they're trying to lure a younger audience to R2. It'll fail miserably. It's a bizarre hotch potch of nothing, to my eyes. It's as if they've thrown in the towel.

I don't believe they have though. I think the suits don't have the foggiest what people want and/or listen/watch. And there are a lot of suits!

Their fingerprints were all over the Jubilee concert thingy, which was top heavy on stuff for the kidz and missed the point entirely, to my mind.

Much more of this and I'll have to change my moniker to Rantovani.

I rarely listen nowadays either.
Re there'll be nobody listening to Radio 2 at all very soon, weren't they saying very similar things about Radio 1 back in the 1990s when Matthew Bannister had his clearout of the presenters that my generation (now the 50 / 60 somethings) had been enjoying. It's still there.
