Is it me or the way the news is put over on R2, but how are imports of turkey meat , from somewhere in Hungary, possibly within a range of 30 or 150 miles of somewhere else, that might or not be owned by Bernard Matthews, pass the bird flu to living turkeys in Suffolk ? are they feeding them it or what ? Confused Confused

As I understand it the Bernard Matthews turkeys were aquired from the same farm in Hungary which was infected with H5N1. Those infected birds then passed it to the other birds already at his farm.

Quite possibly - you'll recall that the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 was caused by a farmer (not ten miles from where I'm typing this) deciding to feed what was almost certainly diseased meat products to his pigs, and look what happened there. I can still remember seeing the huge burning trenches next to the farm in question as I passed by on the A69 a day or two later.

That makes sense but I hadn't heard that had happened.

Did anyone hear Richard Allinson on BFBS on Radio 2 earlier today (12/02/07) and his fridge story- basically he advised he found some Bernard Matthews Turkey meat in his fridge the other day-he gave a description of how they produce the meat, advised how disgusting it was and then concluded "by the way I didn't buy the offending stuff".

His story had me chuckling-certainly after hearing this, along with other negative news coverage on turkey infected meat ,sales must be going down the pan.

I would never ever touch anything made by Bernard Matthews, not because of bird flu but because of the disgusting way they 'treat' the birds. I will not buy any meat from the supermarket, I always use the village butcher.

You are right not not to buy meat/poultry from the supermarket.

When I was a teenager I worked in the butchers department of a local Sainsbury's for a few years.

When I was on sausage making duty we used to have mix rubbish offcuts/scraps of meat with raw sawdust. I was once really told off by a manager for not putting enough sawdust into the mincing machine as the sausages I was making had too much "meat content".

Some of the other things we were ordered to do in making up meat packs would make you feel sick. It does make you wonder if these sort of terrible practices from years ago have any bearing on certain behaviour problems today.

I thought everyone knew that sausages are largely offal and scraps with filler added to bulk them up - depends where you buy them from as to what the 'filler' is, mind you.... then again, most people don't really want to know what's in their food, as long as it tastes good. They'd never eat from McDonalds or KFC (remember the Kentucky Fried Chicken Abscess-Burger story?) again if they knew.

At least we're not quite at the Soylent Green stage yet.... Smile
