In a statement, his family remembered him as "completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit".

Shed a few tears when I heard this terribly sad news.😢😢

He brought so much laughter into this world.

He often had me in stitches watching him - he really didn't give a monkey and, because of his delivery, got away with it.

A huge loss to the world of comedy.

Condolences to his family and friends.

R.I.P Barry - you will be sorely missed. 😢😢 x

I was hoping that by some miracle, he would overcome the odds and recover.

Barry really is, or was one of the greats. Although he'd been inthe UK for many years, I wasn't aware of him until about 1972, when he was in a supporting film (in the days when two films were on offer) I can't remember the other film, but I've never forgotten The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, where Barry Humphries played several characters, one being McKenzie's Aunt Edna Everage. The cast is quite something, too.

I was 17 or 18 when I last saw it and have just found it again. Whether it stands the test of time or not, I have no idea, but it will be fascinating to see Aunt Edna before she became a Dame.

Rest well Barry

So many other high-profile people passed away around the the same time but his death upset me the most.

We went to his stage show in 1982 at Drury Lane and I have rarely laughed so much in a theatre. Wonderful evening.
