BBC Radio 2 today appointed Napster's Jeff Smith as its next head of music.
Mr Smith, currently the director of UK and international programming at Napster and a BBC radio veteran, is to begin his new role on March 26.

He will take over from Colin Martin, who announced his retirement in December.

Smith was credited with playing a major role in shaking up Radio 1 when he oversaw the station's music policy between 1997 and 2000.

He established Radio 1's Evening Session programme and helped to bring DJs Chris Moyles, Jo Whiley, Trevor Nelson, Stuart Maconie and Steve Lamacq to the BBC.

"I'm delighted that Jeff has decided to re-join the BBC," said Lesley Douglas, the controller of Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music. "Colin Martin is a very hard act to follow but I have no doubt that Jeff's love of music, industry experience and recent role at Napster puts him in a unique position to move Radio 2 forward."

Mr Smith joined Napster in 2004 at a time when it was transforming itself from a controversial file-sharing site into a legal download service.

Leanne Sharman, Napster UK vice-president and general manager, said: "For the BBC to recruit from Napster for such a pivotal role in UK radio indicates how important digital has become in the development of the music industry."

Before joining Napster, Mr Smith spent more than 18 years in radio, including stints at the BBC World Service and Capital Radio.

2 guys with the same name. Jeff Smith used to present Gardeners World before Alan Titchmarch IIRC.

Didn't Geoffrey Smith present it years ago as well? He certainly presented some gardening shows and was a panelist on R4's Gardeners' Question Time.

Na, you're thinking of 'Diddy' Geoff Hamilton who used to do the afternoon show on R2.

These two paragraphs are the most depressing thing I've read for years!

Don't worry. Moyles, Whiley, Nelson.... Lesley would never let any of them get in the way of her relentless pursuit of signing yet more talentless TV D-listers.

I can see it now. Lesley and Jeff working together to bring us ... "Kim & Aggie's R2 Techno Show"

Oh come on! What could be better than our Jade hosting a two hour show exclusively featuring the music of The Streets and Lilly Allen...

Even Dame Lesley can afford Shilpa - It would take the wages of Woss and Evans combined. However, Idea If we chuck in Russell brand might we have a deal Question Evil or Very Mad

Shilpa is quite intelligent & talented. So I am at a loss to see why people automatically object to the [highly unlikely] eventuality that she would end up on Radio 2.

Goeff Smith was a gardener who did a lot of work on 'Look North'which did a local Gardeners questions programme. It was hosted by John Thirlwell and also had Peter Seagrave and Prof Bill Sowerbutts.

All the best musicians are dead, so it makes sense to hire a deceased music programmer!
