BBC News is very upset that they didnt win enough awards at the Royal Television Society event this week. They have claimed that the judges were biased against the BBC.

I myself am amazed that their coverage of nothing happening at a farmyard during the recent bird flu outbreak was not rewarded. And I am fearful as to how Natasha will come to terms with not getting any trophies for her sterling work on the 6pm tv news.

I'm also amazed. I don't rate the BBC 6 O'Clock News as it's like having the front page of the Daily Mail shouted at me with added "interactive" rubbish, but the ITN News is just awful. Patronising, sensationalist, and self-aggrandising.

Sky news is even worse, it's like a moving tabloid.

Perhaps they need new categories:

1) Most pointless two-way interview

2) Presenter weraing the most stupid outfit

3) Best coverage of a non-story

4) Best scaremonger

5) Most uses of the word "crisis" in a single bulletin

6) Biggest Umbrella Award (extra credit given for getting the logo in shot)

7) Endurance Award - given to the reporter having to stand out in the cold the longest

viii) Michael Fish Award for Accuracy and Understatement in Weather Forecasting

9) Bill Turnbull Award for sending an anchorman/woman the furthest in search of a pointless live link to the studio that could equally be done as well by a local reporter

10) The Julia George Award for having different names (extra credit if anchorman/woman gets confused over which one should be in use at any one time)

I was surprised they didn't have Steve Hogarth from Marillion as their on the spot reporter when the Napoli capsized - the Marillion singer has done songs about the Estonia and about Donald Campbell's crash in Bluebird. Laughing

12) The "how did it feel" award for the most inappropriate use of that question. Examples would include asking relatives of victims of terrorist &/ or natural disasters how they feel about losing their family members. 100 bonus points for a reporter finding someone who replies that "today is the best day of my life"

Intersting article entitled "TV news is panto for the hard of thinking"

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article1431861.ece

======================
One person has commented on the article:

I hope Chris Addison doesn't tune in to the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2; "text me your views on this serious issue and I'll read them out after I've played this song by Kajagoogoo".

Smile Exactly! I liked the live link in which Turnbull is standing in front of a sheet of early morning whiteness and says: "And if it weren't for the thick fog, you'd be able to see the Bernard Matthews Turkey Farm sheds across the field behind me".

Thank you Bill. Back to the studio then.

PS: Have you noticed how all the current female BBC1 news presenters are baby-doll cuties? Memories of Anna Ford's comment about "body fascism"? Whatever happened to proper journalism?

Ella
