To supplement my posting on the LMS 50th anniversary concert, may I just mention that on the night I purchased facsimile copies of the first two LMS magazines from 1957.
At that time the President was Eric Coates, with Chairman Harry Dexter and Vice-Chairman Billy Mayerl.
Eevn then there were complaints that light music was being sidestepped by other forms. However, at that time the BBC was very active in its promotion (why isn't it today?).
New members enrolled in 1957 included amongst many others Charles Mackerras, Mantovani, Jack Payne, Clive Richardson, Eric Robinson, Ernest Tomlinson (still there in 2007!), Sandy Macpherson, Norrie Paramor, Ronald Binge, Anthony Collins, Robert Farnon and Albert Ketelbey.
Some things never change--in issue 2 Billy Mayerl complained about the poor state of the piano provided for a recital which he had recently attempted to give.
Other points of interest include a report of the Society's Annual Dinner (I don't think they have such an event now) and a long interview with Robert Farnon.
The magazine is still going strong today and I receive a copy quarterly.
