I decided to have a bit of retail therapy this morning and, being a well-known cheapskate, headed for a local charity shop.
Ten minutes later I emerged with, amongst other things, Richmal Crompton's William the Fourth, bought for the princely sum of 50p.
You may think that this is a bit juvenile for a man of nearly 60 but I've been addicted to the books ever since I was 8. The plots are enjoyable enough but the real treat is Miss Crompton's gorgeously witty and sardonic prose, which makes no concessions to the youth of its target readership. I look forward to a few evenings of enjoyment.

I love to find a bargain in a charity shop, I only go in for books and occasionally find one I want to read.
A couple of months ago I got 'A mad world, my masters' by John Simpson for the enormous price of 30p |
