Yesterday saw the release of what could be one of Ireland's biggest songs of 2008. The Ballad of Ronnie Drew pays tribute to the former Dubliners singer who is currently recovering from cancer. The single was launched last night on The Late Late Show where a number of the stars involved in the recording - U2, Shane Magowan, Sinead O'Connor, Damien Dempsey, Andrea Corr, Kila, Liam O'Maonlai from Hothouse Flowers and the Dubliners - performed the song and chatted to host Pat Kenny. Ronnie was in the audience and was interviewed briefly.
The download single was available yesterday with the physical single out next Friday and the DVD a week later. Other stars involved include Christy Moore, Paul Brady and Chris de Burgh. |

The Late Late Show has been put up on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGNxz7zeU10 - as has the video, several times, pinched from U2.com, so someone might claim breach of copyright for those.
Nice to see just about all the heavyweight Irish musical talent coming together in one place to pay their tribute to a legendary figure of folk music. Like a lot of charity singles it doesn't have much of a melody, but I'm sure it will be heard sung in pubs across the land once the patrons get a few pints of the black and cream stuff down their gullets. _________________ Ron |
