Just back from seeing Tift Merritt doing a one-woman show at the Cluny, Newcastle upon Tyne. She didn't need a band - although she's short (she comes up to my shoulders and I'm only 5'10"), she managed to fill the room with her voice on the numerous off-mic numbers she performed right at the front of the stage.
Her encore consisted of no less than four numbers, three of which she took as audience requests (she answered my request for "Tambourine" by saying she'd be whirling around the stage like a mad woman - "Go for it!").
A really lovely lady who had plenty of time for each person in the (lengthy) queue to sign stuff - we had a conversation about Scotland (her ancestors come from Islay - "yes, where the distilleries are!") and she happily posed for the obligatory photo....
Haven't processed any of the shots yet - maybe tomorrow when I'm up and about. Right, which of my favourite artists is next to see live? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Have just dipped my toe in the water and bought her Another Country CD from America, for less than half the price on Amazon UK or in the high street here - how ludicrous is that?
Anyway, it's lovely, a nice change from all those who think they have to belt it out and have such a heavy production job. _________________ Ron |
