The Gary Cooper Western classic 'High Noon' marked the debut of one of my top three film 'villains', Lee Van Cleef. The other two being Leo Gordon and Jack Elam. Does anyone know what was interesting about Lee's debut, remembering that he was later dubbed the star with the nicotine voice? |

Looks like no one knows this bit of movie trivia!
Lee Van Cleef was the first person seen on screen in the film, but he never spoke a word of dialogue! He was also considered for the part of the deputy (played by Lloyd Bridges) on the condition that he had his nose straightened! Lee refused and later commented that it was his 'talent for looking mean' that kept him in work almost forty years. Lee died in 1989. In my view he was the best of the Western villains. |

Briant, yes I'll go along with that, but I think he had a very straight nose (maybe it was a reference to it looking like a beak!
I remember his brief appearances in TV series like Bronco, Cheyenne etc., always a baddie.

Cheers John W! I wrote to LVC c/o Universal Studios back in the late fifties and received a signed photo! Long lost now through several house moves, alas. In 'Gunfight at the OK Corral' Lee is again seen riding into town at the start of the film and this time he is out to get Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday. Another film he was in was 'Tribute to a Bad Man' with James Cagney, and he has a comedy role as one of the cowhands in the bunkhouse, talking about 'women in corsets' while praticising his knife throwing! |
