Quote: | Police officers in London should walk the beat on their own and not in pairs, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner has said.
Sir Paul Stephenson believes single patrols would make officers more approachable and effectively double the number of patrols. |

I don't think this is a good idea in certain areas? If a police officer get cornered and can't contact back up then if could end causing problems. Also it's going to end up being a publicity stunt? Police federation saying "we have have more officers on the beat, but it won't be as they are more spread out.

I think it's a matter for the Metropolitan Police to decide.
I'd hate to get corned, though, for sure. |

Of course, but I'm only stating a fact. I hope it helps the discussion. |

I'm not having a go.... That statement of yours saying " It's a matter for the Metropolitan Police to decide" doesn't really explain what you maybe thinking? I'm not disputing it's not down to the met, but if for an example Matthew Bannister said that ' he wouldn't have no debate to discuss on the show. I thought this forum was to discuss things? |

I'm not thinking anything; I'm not a beat copper in London and nor do I run the Met, so it's not really an issue for which my thoughts have any relevance - it's one for the individual police officers who will be affected by such a decision and for the Metropolitan Police Authority who will put any decision into effect. Hence my comment.

I always thought Bannister was a decent bloke. He's agreeing with me, after all. |

Yes Matthew Bannister is a good choice of cover. It will be a shock to the system when Jeremy returns.
Colby, do you work in the media or radio? |

Of course people can have and express and opinion. The police are supposed to work for the community & be answerable to them. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I don't agree that people's comments or thoughts about issues of personal security are of much relevance to the reality of the situation, and in that respect the matter is one for (a) the officers likely to effected and (b) the Authority. Whatever members of the community feel about it can only be taken into consideration, but it shouldn't be a determining factor and therefore I can't see why debate about it can have much bearing on the outcome. |
