So all the media hype surrounding Susan Boyle put the virgin from West Lothian into second place. Street dance group Diversity have won the show. Susan will still be a winner and probably has loads of contracts.

I expect to hear that Julie Walters will play Susan Boyle in a film next! The bookies will have cleaned up no doubt!
Someone said to me that if the dance group have about twenty members and all of their friends and family vote for them ten times then....... |

Oh don't be so cynical Briant, BGT is a successful phenomena - the news on TV said that there were about 4 million votes cast and Diversity won by about 200,000 so maybe you'd like to update your 'someome said' posting with that more reliable information

I thought BGT was very enjoyable this year, and last night's final was a really difficult call. I'd hate to have been in the unenviable position of having to decide - although in a way I'm glad that Susan Boyle eventually fell at the last hurdle due (I assume) to all the media interest in her of late. She has an unbelievable singing voice but seems a bit, er, weird. Still, according to today's various news feeds she's already lined up for between £6m and £8m in appearance contracts thanks to that nice kind Mr. Cowell.
Diversity were absolutely stunning (it's difficult to see how any dance troupe could be better, really) and deserved to win the talent contest. Well done to them. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Yes I think viewers thought Susan Boyle will do OK so let's vote for the kids. Anyway you notice we've only heard her sing two songs, and her neighbours have probably heard them a dozen times at the pub karaoke
The problem with Diversity is there are 11 of them.
You might remember a smaller dance group in the first BGT, the Kombat-Breakers. They are a local group from Coventry, I know two of the lads. It hasn't made a full-time career for them, they get gigs but the money has to be split between the group.
I think Cowell is disappointed with the general quality of the acts; he's looing for a blockbuster act and hasn't got it.

Cynical, moi John? I just don't see where Diversity are going after their gig for the Royals. Will they have any longevity in the business the way a singer can and does? |

Well yes that was the point I was making. Folks won't pay much for their performances, and they can't make records, though I suppose they could do videos.... |

I don't think it matters. Although Cowell does, of course, own the format (worldwide) and has first refusal on all the semi-finalists, the point of he show is essentially to pick an act to appear t the Royal Variety Show and that's what it's done - and done it very well.
In doing so, ITV1 got something like a 20m audience, which is unprecedented these days, so it's worked from the network point of view - and I assume did something to boost ad revenues for the beleagured network (which is down 40% year-on-year).
All in all, pretty good telly in my book, irrespective of all the speculation about future commercial potential. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Yeah, I find it funny that a dance troupe has won - because it's harder for Cowell to make any money out of 'em. And that's the only reason he does these shows. |

Of course he does (as we've discussed here before).Let's not forget, however, that not only does he "do" the shows but he owns the formats that are then licensed to the broadcast networks though his "Syco" company and onwards to ITV Plc via TalkbackThames. That indicates pretty good business nouse in my book, so good for him I say.
Bear in mind, also, that Saturday's gained ITV1 an audience estimated at 20 million - not to be sneezed at in these austere broadcasting times. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

I never said Cowell was a bad businessman. Quite the opposite - he knows bugger all about music or television or "talent" but quite a lot about making money. |

If he knows so little about music, television and talent...... how come he makes a lot of money out of music, television and talent? And how come his "properties" (ie: musicians/singers, television formats and "talent") generate such substantial revenues for many of the parties involved? Was it by luck alone that he became head of A&R at BMG just when it mattered - or was it because he had a sense of what might be commercial and what might not?
More specifically, if he knows so little about television, how come one of his format shows (BGT - one of several) managed to gain a 20 million audience on Saturday night? How come the beleagered ITV1 gained the best spot ad sales they have had for months? How come the ITV channel on YouTube achieved 100 millions hits (even with 30 sec pre-roll ads) to the Susan Boyle audition video alone?
My assumption is that he probably knows more about what will and what won't work commercially than most.

There are some damn-right cruel things being said about Susan Boyle. She has got a fantastic voice and, in my opinion, sounds just as good as Elaine Paige.
I wish Susan all the very best of luck. |

Don't go saying that round here; they'll have her presenting a show on R2 before you can blink!
Mind you she does have the perfect face for radio! |

Perhaps Susan Boyle could appear on the Elaine Paige show as a guest? It would be great to hear Susan perform live in the studio, possibly duetting with Elaine herself?
They could perform the Elaine Paige / Barbara Dixon classic! |

Susan Boyle could do the star turn on Friday Night is Boogie Night (as John Peel used to call it back in the 70s). Not that I even listen because I'm always in the pub at that time, but she has such a great voice that needs to be further showcased. _________________ (signature and avatar removed, violated forum Rule 2.) |

Or maybe she could appear on Radio 4's "In The Psychiatrist's Chair"...
(I assume FNIMN is a foregone conclusion) |

No, No, a thousand times No!
Susan Boyle can sing. In the same way that thousands of other people can sing, at home, or, like my mum-in-law, in a little amateur choir, and better than many others who are paid vast sums to do it professionally.
However, after that one, natural, barnstorming performance of I Dreamed A Dream, the weight of public expectancy and the inevitable media pressure got to her, just as it would to any mortal.
Her semi-final performance of Memory was awful - it's the only song I like EP singing, because it is like a cat's meowling and it sends shivers down my spine, but she murdered it. Mind you, it didn't help that somebody had hit on the idea of making her look like Moira Anderson, dumping the cheeky wiggle and lollipop mike, in favour of something from Milletts and an operatic pose and sound.
She didn't look or sound well then, and she was ten times worse on the final night, revisiting Les Mis.
Well, once she's recovered there's the inevitable CD, which should cover her fees in the Priory, but who knows if she'll be able to handle the BGT tour and anything after that?
As for her and Elaine Paige doing I Know Him So Well, a song which vies with Oh Danny Boy and Imagine as the most maudlin, and with the last phrase of Summer Nights as the most cringeworthy - I hope not. _________________ Ron |
