Reports earlier that he was in a coma are now being updated to say that he has been pronounced dead.
Quite a shock but I've been thinking recently that he was not going to get through this latest tour.
I saw him with the Jacksons in Birmingham in I think 1979 or 1981, will have to check, when Blame It On The Boogie was the hit and he was still black, we saw his moonwalking for the first time. It was a great concert.

Not a fan of his, so forgive me if I don't feel anything at all about the news of his death.

I can't help feeling a twinge of sadness at the death of someone so young (relatively). We shall doubtless be bombarded with books and films raking up and over his private life but, like Gambo said this morning, I prefer just to remember the man's musical talents which brought us, with the help of Quincy Jones, three superb albums Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad.
My wife saw him in concert when he was at his peak (can't remember the year) and was so impressed with the spectacle and the sound. Despite pre-registering for tickets of the O2 gigs this year she was unsuccessful in getting any, which turns out to be just as well. The organisers are going to have one big headache in refunding everybody. _________________ Ron |

I actually got this news off Twitter, which was a bit weird (especially watching comedians make jokes on the spot, like a real-time Mock The Week).
I do think it's a great shame. In his prime he was a fabulous entertainer - but he seems to have been a horrible, deceitful man and it's hard to shake that perception.
However, there was an interesting interview with Gambo at about five minutes after Midnight where he very carefully seemed to be implying it was all bollocks: that Jackson was never going to do these O2 dates, and it wasn't even him at the press conference. The implications of this were left hanging. |

The life that I have is all that I have,
And the life that I have is yours.
The love that I have of the life that I have
Is yours and yours and yours.
A sleep I shall have,
A rest I shall have,
yet death will be but a pause,
For the peace of years
in the long green grass,
Will be yours and yours and yours.

This is very sad news. His music will live on like Elvis has. I hope someone will do something similar to Graceland so people can go and visit all around the world. I guess some fans will believe he's still alive?

Gambo's referencences are quite right. Don't think it was MJ at those press conferences, the impersonators fingers were too long.
I've been wondering how long MJ could hang on, if the amount of work he had done were true, the anasthetics would have had seriously weakened his physical strength. |

I asked my wife about the concert and she said it was 1979, just a few weeks before we got engaged. Then she said she still had her ticket! And sure enough in our photo album from that year there's her ticket, 18th Feb 1979, at the Bingley Hall, Birmingham, ticket price £4, and on it there's a nice sepia photo image of the Jacksons. I still remember his light blue metallic suit and dancing like we hadn't ever seen before |

Not sure I really want to know any more facts that I already know thank you Mark.
I'm really rather fed up with the whole business already and couldn't care if I never heard his name again.

Now, I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories but I can't help but feel a bit cynical about this:
Jacko's sold 300,000 records in the UK alone in just 2 days (handily, all the stores had stocked up because of his concert)
His songs and videos have been played on nearly every media outlet in the world
He's recorded songs for his children that were only to be released "after his death"
A rehearsal for the O2 show was recorded by multiple high-def cameras and in surround sound - which will soon be released on DVD and CD as a new live album
All of which would add up to a hefty much-needed payday for Jacko. If he weren't dead, of course... |

...... and they were saying people should donate their ticket funds to charity or his estate on JV today................
They don't need it after all the tracks sold since his death.

I'm gutted...Had tickets to see him at the O2. Had flight booked, hotel everything. Still coming over to see Blighty! I guess though Michael's debts will be wiped out if people continue to buy his stuff. And his kids will become richer than they probably already are ( saying in the news over here that he has money in trusts that his creditors cannot get their hands on.)

That whole slot on JV really tee'd me off, Helen. Of course people should get their money back. And all these so-called fans who are busy buying up his old stuff should ask themselves why they didn't buy it in the first place, and maybe he wouldn't have been so pressurised into undertaking a frankly impossible schedule of concerts to try to recover his financial losses. The whole scenario is really tacky.... people claiming he had never been fitter (!) and others saying they knew he was dying...and the family...???? _________________ Minx

Looks like his body will lay in state for fans to pay there last respects. His funeral could take place this coming weekend and buried in Neverland. I do think it's a little bit over the top. James Brown body layed in state when he died. Also MJ is not the Biological father of his children.

I'm so glad someone else feels the same way! As you say why buy it now just because he's dead?
As Jane says it's not just the ticket prices that will have been paid for. Hotels, flights, trains most likely won't be refundable.

I found the Michael Jackson memorial event very moving. Sat with my wife in silence most of the time, holding hands sometimes, she cried all through it, and I had a tear at the beginning and at the end.
I would have liked to have heard/seen more of Michael on the screen.

I thought the service was moving too, I felt sorry for poor Paris at the end
I thought the guy who sang gone too soon was good and thought Jermaine done really well to sing that song. He's never been the best singer but given the circumstances I thought he sounded as good as he could.
I watched on BBC2 and thought that Gambo sounded close to tears a few times which I was not expecting.
Just as a by the way, I thought Smokey Robinson looked amazing for a bloke of nearly 70. |

I am flabbergasted that this was shown on BBC2 AND the News Channel. I have just sent a complaint to the BBC about their ludicrous overreaction to the whole story, and the resulting disruption to programming. For example, whilst this was on the News Channel, there was no other News at all and the 8.00 programme on BBC2 was cancelled. Unbelievable. _________________ MiS |

But MiS, there were maybe a billion viewers worldwide so the BBC had to make special effort surely? That's what you pay your licence for.

Yes but Minx, surely that is what his true fans WANTED? I think it was just right, though we should have had more video of Jacko.

No matter how many viewers worldwide, John, it doesn't justify being shown on 2 BBC channels at once, especially when it was also live on Five and numerous other news channels. Overkill? You bet! _________________ MiS |

I think the coverage was justified to reach as many BBC viewers as pssible, it's what the licence is for. The most watched live 2 hours in TV history.
FFS MIS you could have read a book or watched something else for two hours, surely.

Look I get annoyed with all the coverage of football, snooker, formula and so on but I don't feel the need to rush off the my computer and type out a disgusted of Tunbridge wells type letter, that's the way things are and I accept that.
Crikey it was only 3 hours and to my mind it was justified, like it or not MJ had worldwide appeal and a huge following here in the UK. I am glad it was on the BBC as I thought their coverage was very good.
If you wanted to hear the news at 8 why didn't you put the radio on? or read teletext. |

That's a bit harsh, John! I completely disagree with you that that is what the licence fee is for, but I'd rather you didn't get abusive about it. We ususlly have a fair exchange of views on here without losing our rags! _________________ MiS |

Sorry if that was a bit hard on you but clearly if the BBC had not made the service available to all it's viewers there would have been far more complaints than the type you have submitted.
I recall times when the same programme has been broadcast on two BBC channels, like tennis and cricket matches on both BBC1 and BBC2 at the same time. Doesn't happen often, but it does! I'm sure you'll want to complain about that too!

Fair point, the Beeb do get carried away with what sport they have left - if only they had The Ashes
Still don't understand why if MJ was on BBC2 it had to take over the news channel as well...especially given that every other news channel except Russia Today was also showing it! _________________ MiS |

I suppose some viewers can receive one of those stations and not the other, or one of them can be viewed HD or accessed on iplayer.
Ashes? There's no cricket on BBC? Yippee! |

We watched it on Sky News |

I watched less than 5 minutes of it on Fox TV but agreed with their presenter how ludicrous it was that the LA freeways were shut just for it.
A circus which sadly will go on and on when they no doubt will release the DVD of it.

Did anyone tune into the Radio 2 programme re the memorial event hosted by Richard Allinson.
I thought Radio 2's coverage was very good and Richard presented the show in a very well balanced way.
The BBC 's TV coverage was also excellent.
Can't understand the anti Michael Jackson messages on this thread-bizarre. |
