Apologies for this being slightly off-topic but I was wondering what is the general feeling from you good people reading from several discussion sections here?
John runs a fantastic forum for us all and I know he himself is considering giving it a revamp sometime.
So that lead me to think how you feel switching between the Headers at this Forum "Shows & Music On Radio 2", "Radio 2 What's Happening" and "Gripes About Shows & Music"?
Would it be better to have all three Headers under "Current Radio 2" then you can see everything current what's going on all one one page? or perhaps just "What's Happening" and "Gripes" be merged together as the latter doesn't get so many Posters these days?
What do you guys think?
Kind Regards
Malcy B

Hi malcyb,

Must echo that it's a great forum, all thanks to John.

At first glance I like the idea of Current Radio 2. Need to look at the other topics but wanted to say thanks to John.

Sounds OK to me to merge them, but I always think of the 'Gripes' section like a room you can go into for a short while whilst you have a rant away from the other stuff, and come back relaxed Very Happy

Thanks for complements and input.

I agree that rarely used parts of the board could be merged and some tidying up done. The Gripes section was set up so that people who disliked repetitive rants could avoid them, so maybe I could archive a lot of that stuff during a tidy up?

So ideas are welcome. Maybe when the new schedule is up and running in April that might give us some ideas.

And maybe we could have a music esharing section, like say youtube links to music we like or would like on Radio 2. There's a way of putting the youtube screen directly into messages (rather than open up a youtube page) which makes such sharing more direct and enjoyable.

Ideally you need to upgrade to phpBB3.* in order to be able use video embed tags, John.

John

Just a thought could we have a computers/techonlogy section somewhere on the forum please?

I know we've often posted links with answers to various questions that have arisen but it's often hard to track them down weeks or months later when you might want to use the info.

We could use it for useful weblinks as well.

That is a good idea Helen.

While I'm here I would personally prefer the gripes section to stay separate from the others but I'll go along with what the majority prefer.

To be quite frank, I think that it's a bit cheeky for someone who has been registered here 18 months and posted 28 times, mainly to publicise BBC local radio programmes introduced by Colin Berry, and his own internet radio project, to ask for suggestions to change the board.

It has been very quiet, but then I think we've just about expended all the vitriol there is to be had about Messrs Evans, Ross, Wright and Ball. Certainly the "Gripes" section seems to be superfluous, because everyone moans in the other two.

It is a shame that the second half of the board is not more lively. There is clearly little appetite amongst the members to discuss anything of a general nature, or current affairs, because, God knows, I've tried to stimulate interest there and many's the thread that hasn't progressed beyond one reply, sometimes not even that. (I am astounded that no-one else has remarked upon minx's photographs of her recent holiday in South Africa).

I find the suggestion that the facility to embed music videos be added slightly ironic. Most people here seem to want to see the Radio 2 clock turned back, to remove the current "Radio 1 for thirtysomethings" format and play more old and light music and have more speech during the day, and yet you want to drag the forum into the 21st century by enabling trashy youtube videos.

At the end of the day it's your board, John, and it has been a very good one. Do with it what you will - I'm sure it will be fine.

RiR,

I expect many here post on other forums and maybe exchange niceties about news and politics there.

As for youtube I would expect folks to post links to their favourite artistes in concert, there is a lot of stuff from the 70s, 80s and 90s as well as vintage musicals from the 30s etc.

As for upgrading the php version of this forum I'm not sure how to go about that, either I've forgotten or I can't find some of the admin links to the folks running this forum type. I'll look around bizhat.com.

They do indeed. And, on reflection, in-depth current affairs discussions may not be such a good idea - I've witnessed several dust-ups and board implosions as a result of some people's rather extreme opinions.

Other than for making it more secure or less prone to warnings about possible trojans/viruses I'm not sure it's worth it. It seems to run reliably, and youtube is but a click away.

It is worth upgrading if at all possible. phpBB2.0 is prone to "exploits" - that is, back-door entries into the server via the posting system that then gain the bots access to the database, personal details, etc. The phpBB forums software is Open Source, meaning that anybody can analyse the code of every page and write inject code for it.

The reason why the phpBB team updated to version 3.0 was because of the risks to security posed by the continued use of version 2. I had a busy forum that was brought to its knees but such an attack and you just never know what information has been rifled from the MySQL database.

If bizhat.com hosts and controls the site installation, then ask them what opportunity there is to upgrade. I'd be worried if they either can't or won't. It just doesn't make sense.

If, on the other hand, you're in control of the installation, then it's a relatively straightforward job to download the new version files, dump them onto the server and run the supplied upgrade script from the current v2.0 to the latest v3.0 (after backing up pages and database, of course).

I don't think I am in control here. I own domain r2ok.co.uk but not the forum. I inherited this place when admin went awol. It's a free (no cost) forum, I only paid a small fee to remove ads.

I'm inclined to follow RockitRon's advice and just leave this forum in it's current version till it fails, then me or someone can start a new one. Our sister R3ok forum had to restart from scratch. I don't admin that one, after we had an election of admin/mods.

John, yes I've just had a mooch around bizhat and I see that they host the forums and do all the backend stuff. In that case, it's safe to assume that they look after security. If you were hosting yourself it would be a different issue but in this instance you're probably safe.

John,

Is there anyway we could have a Technical/Consumer area on here as I mentioned above?

I think it would be useful.
