Just to let everyone know that, after many months of promising, I have today set up an online petition calling for Brian Matthew to receive a knighthood for his services to broadcasting over more than 60 years.

If you want to view and consider signing this, it's to be found on www.PetitionOnline.com/bmatthew/petition.html

I do hope some of you may feel able to support this.

Ian.

What about making it a No10 Downing St petition. They have them on so many issues, it must be worth a try.

Should have mentioned that I've signed it too.

Ian,

As well as the petition, is the formal route being tried too? There is presumably a nomination procedure for getting honours awarded?

Thanks for positive reactions.

This started life on a Facebook group and reaction on there has also been favourable.

I tried the Downing St route yesterday but the site was shut for the Parliamentary recess. Not sure how any announcement on a General Election might affect this but I'll look into this.

I nominated a friend formally for a MBE some years ago--alas, unsuccessfully. The difficulty is that they require a pretty detailed statement from the nominator and at least two statements (preferably anything up to five) from other people to back this up. Really somebody who knows Brian personally would be best placed to provide this, as I don't have the sort of intimate knowledge of his CV that would be needed. Any thoughts? Do you think it might be worth my batting this to Phil Swern?

Ian.

It can't do any harm, Ian, although I suspect that it will have been done before now. I was happy to add my signature but just wonder, thinking of his contemporary on the station, whether you might have a better chance of success aiming for CBE.

Thanks, Ron. Would certainly be happy if he got a CBE but Terry Wogan and Jimmy Young both got Ks for no greater a contribution to broadcasting. Thanks for your interest, anyway.
