I think it's fair to say that Stonehenge will be around until at least the end of the day, Mark.

But can you be sure Mark? Perhaps he is planning to demolish it and build a house there.

I like the idea of making unemployment a top project. That's definitely a vote-winner, I would have thought! Smile

I don't think there's much doubt that this government's policies will cause unemployment to rise.

It has caused unemployment. Projects have been haulted, contractors and people who have wrote up plans for these projects will be out of jobs.

Mark, they are quite right to halt projects that we as a nation just cannot afford.

I heard yesterday that one of my public sector clients (indirectly - being a "client of a client") is having its budget slashed and as a result all contracts are being suspended. That is currently accounting for 20% of my work, so that's a contract I now have to find elsewhere if I'm to pay for (a) the expected VAT increase to 20%, and (b) higher taxes on what I earn and what I spend.

Being self-employed, I qualify for bugger all when it comes to state benefits and yet I pay into the system (and take much higher risks) like everybody else!

So....... thanks, Mr. Osborne. On yer bike, Mr. Osborne.

I just can't reconcile calls for staff numbers to be slashed with a demand for people to delay retirement.

Does this mean that in a few years time we'll have a much bigger army even than now of unemployed, disaffected young people and an array of older folk who want to retire but can't? The potential consequences for society don't bear thinking about.

Ian.

Plus they are now saying that people will have to join company pension schemes. They used to until Thatcher opened it up to private enterprise.

I heard John Humprys almost tearing Glegg to pieces this morning about all these cuts. Glegg was out of his comfort zone and didn't have Cammy with him. I actually quite like Nick Clegg but he didn't come across very well at all and Humph had him on the ropes pretty much from the start.

As for the VAT rise, not good at all Sad

Having been self-employed or on freelance contract for the majority of the last 30 years I reckon I'll be working until I drop anyhow since there are few state safety nets for me. So the raising of the retirement age doesn't really affect me!
