You've mentioned iPod. There's your answer. I recommend an iPod. Or an iPod Touch (wot the Son has). Or an iPod Shuffle (wot the wife has) or even an iPhone (wot I and the Daughter has).
Simples!
Colin

If you just want it for music, to load it with your record collection and itunes downloads, the Classic is the best. I've got the 5th generation 80Gb,, which is supposed to hold "up to 20,000 tracks" - it managed 16,000, which is quite sufficient for what I use it for, on holiday, played through a speaker/dock, and in the car.
The current model is supposed to have twice the capacity and costs around £180. _________________ Ron |

For most people, a tiny iPod Shuffle will suffice. It's so small it will clip on a lapel very inconspicuously and still holds more songs that most people will need in a month of Sundays. My wife's Shuffle is fabulous.
I've got about 300 songs in my iPhone playlist - which syncs with the main library in iTunes on my iMac when connected - but I regularly play about 40 at most (mind you, some of them are 20-30 minutes long!). |

If you want to put plenty of tracks on, I think most will find the Shuffle somewhat limited very quickly, and is not recommended in car.
Currently I'm using an 8gb Ipod Nano which is full with about 1700 tunes on. The Apple estimates for storage are always a bit exaggerated as they don't take into account the amount of space used by the album artwork.
I'm looking to go for a 16gb version, the new one having a touch screen (160 quid).
If you don't mind having an older version, you can get one from Apple fully refurbished fully guaranteed and with a big saving, from the Apple store. They come with a new cover, packaging and ear pieces.
In car avoid the FM transmitter option, they do work but you will always be retuning as you move around and plenty of hiss. Most new cars have the option to use the Ipod as the CD changer, requiring direct connection to the car, but you can use the car radio and steering wheel controls to change the tracks etc, some even displaying the track names on the RDS screen, I bought one and fitted it to my Audi for 120 quid.
Have a look at the Dension website for the application and cost for your car. |

I've got the 8gb Nano, it's ook think I would have been better off getting the 16gb one for me and the shuffle for OH as I am constantly having ot move stuff about to get new stuff on, and OH's sits mostly empty
it would have been nice to know they were releasing the new touch screen one as I've only had mine a few months.
there is no point buying another brand itunes when the only player on your pc is pretty good. I'd much rather have a non apple mp3 but it's like wearing a brown parka _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

I wouldn't worry too much about that, some reviews I've read are not too positive. Its the first generation Nano to lose something (a camera), and to be more expensive than the last. It also uses different on board software than previous versions.
To me the amount of storage is more important than the latest version. |
