Peter Stringfellow has written to ministers to ask to repay his winter fuel allowance, saying the money is "totally unnecessary" to him.

He's right, and I bet not many others will follow suit.

My next door but one neighbour is actually a distant relative of Peter and my sons spend some time there as they are friends with his son

From what I can gather Pete is a very welcoming generous and kind man and it doesn't surprise me in the least that he is making this gesture

I don't think that its just a publicity stunt and I really hope that others like him will follow his example or if not give the money to charity

Its nice to see that some celebrities do still have some moral conscience

Ruddles: I agree it is a nice gesture, but there just isn't the mechanism to accept these offers, and with massive cutbacks in the public sector there never will be.

Mind you, I wonder how many celebs etc will make these grand gestures, knowing they can't be implemented!

Yes Schiz I can see your point because the system probably can't budget for generous people who don't want the bonus and who would rather see it go to a needy pensioner

Give it back to them and the Government would probably waste it on some survey to find out how happy we all are

And I can give them the answer for free Bloody Miserable Mad

Colin I really don't think from what I know that this is a PR stunt

I think he might be hoping other celebrities follow his lead and I'm sure his ego will be boosted by the fact he is the first to do it but I think his motives are genuine

If he's making a political point, then fair enough, but if he wants the money to go to better use then all he has to do is to go to the home of the nearest elderly people and hand it over.

My residents all receive the heat allowance but they don't pay for heating directly do they... You could argue the private residents do as part of their fee but not the Social Service ones.. Should they still receive it?
I'm also puzzled as to why you think elderly people always want hand outs? they are some of the better off nowadays..

You're right. My mother-in-law lives in a sheltered housing scheme and she gets the allowance even though all of her payments are included in her rent.

I would be the first to agree that the winter fuel allowance should be means tested so people who don't need it don't get it

However the reality at present is that it is not means tested so any rich pensioner who receives it and is generous enough to give it away is a good egg in my book for whatever reason he or she does so

If you can't legally give it back to the Government then give it to a decent charity or an organisation which looks after destitute or hard up pensioners

Sir Alan Sugar did the same thing, but they refused to eccept it so he gave it to charity.

Or even "accept" it, Mark! You've changed the meaning with one word! Cool

When I see some of Mark's postings I sometimes think how clever, I mean if someone had meant to write that, how clever.

I remember an article in the Edinburgh Scotsman about a court case, and it said 'The defendant admitted 5 precious convictions'.

The winter fuel allowance for pensioners is only affordable because it isn't means tested.
I personally would love to see it means tested so only those who need it receive it, but it would cost too much to do this.
PS has had plenty of time to do something with his money like AS but why does he have to make a song and "pole" dance about it? publicity stunt, political comment? yes I think so

and a first class prat too (imo)
