I've long recommended Audacity as a good audio recorder and editor + MP3 encoder for Windows and Mac computers, but I can see why some find it a bit perplexing when needing to make a quick, simple recording.

Today, I've been testing an alternative recorder. It's called FREE Hi-Q Recorder and it's actually very good. It's free (as it says on the label) in its basic form, and can record a "Stereo Mix" stream with no faffing around or changing of settings whatever. It saves an MP3 file at 96Khz, which is fine for general recordings, especially speech. To improve on this, you have to pay for an upgrade which is fair enough.

I've been using it in conjunction with Audacity - record with FREE Hi-Q and then open with Audacity for tidying up and further editing as required.

The results are good and it's ideal for complete newbies for whom simplicity is the order of the day!!!

I'm including a section on the above in my video podcast tutorials on using Audacity - of which I've now created 12 out of the 20 modules planned.
