The wonderful, inimitable Don Van Vliet - better known to all as Captain Beefheart, has died at the young age of 69 as a result of complications arising from Multiple Sclerosis.

With a growling bass voice, that whooped and hollered in the manner of one of his earliest heroes, bluesman Howlin' Wolf, Captain Beefheart became a hugely influential figure in rock music.

Artists like Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Franz Ferdinand, Oasis, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The White Stripes are among those who have cited him as an influence.

Makes me very sad to read of this.. a big friend of Frank Zappa too of course Sad a little too far out there mostly for my tastes back then but still a good listen when in the mood.
Another of my heros departed.. still, at least the Captain and Frank will be together again pulling their hair out over the state of "music" today.. I dread to think what Frank woiuld have to say about Simon Cowell..

I always liked "Gimmi Dat Harp boy" and in this video, Harpo Marx is trhe star! Laughing

Saw the Captain in the early Seventies. He shaped my musical tastes for a long time afterwards. A sad loss.

I'll expect Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone and Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service on 6 Music to feature his music in tribute.

Saw Capt Beefheart & His Magic Band at the Bickershaw Festival when I was about 17. I like alot of his music- basicly blues with a few freaky rock pretentions. I liked Safe as Milk & a few of this other albums- havn't got any on CD. I check his music out on you tube quite frequently
I may download a few selected tracks from i tunes if they have any
"Click Clack" is a good blues tune
He gave up music way back, as I understand it

Wasn't he a great favourite of John Peel? I seem to remember him mentioning the name quite a lot in those days.

Yes, very much so. It was John Peel who originally got me listening to the Captain back in the early/mid 70s when he used to play his stuff on his late night Radio One show.

Chris Hawkins played 'Tropical Hot Dog Night' in tribute this morning on 6 Music, and mentioned Cerys Matthews' and Marc Riley's tribute on their programme yesterday.

Isn't it interesting that it's 6Music that gives the Captain a mention, whereas from Radio 2 we get not so much as a sniff. I guess most of the producers haven't the foggiest idea who Captain Beefheart was!

I don't listen to JW's show but I'd have thought he would have given a nod...

Stuart Maconie on 6music has just played three or four tracks by Captain Beefheart from 1968, all pretty good, with some fabulous percussion.

As for Radio 2 playing his stuff, forget it! Johnnie Walker is too busy playing Get It On and My Sweet Lord, whilst Brian Matthew would probably have a seizure. As Colin says, the producers will not have heard of him.

Despite my comment above, Brian Matthew paid a tribute to Captain Beefheart on SOT60s today (Abba Zabba from Safe As Milk I think).

Yes, that came to my mind as I listened this morning!
