Several friends of mine have been enthusing about a smartphone app called TuneIn, which runs on iPhone and (as far as I know) Android-based products as well. I've succumbed - and glad I did.

For 59p you get a fabulous and seamingly limitless alternative to the gack offered up by R2 from early morning until early evenings. Almost every radio station in the UK is accessible via web stream, you can create favourite lists, you can set on/off timers and there's even a Record button for capturing any stream. This can the be synched with a Mac or Windows computer for later transfer. Brilliant!

I can now slot my iPhone into its Gear4 dock, aet the alarm and liaten to something better than the rubbish to be heard on R2 at 6.30am weekdays!

The choice is incredible.

Sounds great if you want to use your phone for this! I'm not a mobile phone + whatever else it can do person Wink

, the only thing I use on mine is the camera, which is handy when you don't have one with you.

Going slightly off topic Colin, but it's regarding listening to radio. In one of the blogs referring to the new stand alone radio player that the BBC are to use I came across this in a response from a blogger.

"I am lucky to use a paid for magic piece of software on my iMac to find radio stations worldwide, including all BBC output, search facilities are a given for that. The bonus is it auto records straight to HD. I can also put said programme onto other devices to listen as and when I choose, no need for podcasts esp BBC music based show podcasts which axe the music content due to contract restrictions."

I use Total Recorder but it doesn't record straight to hard drive. Has anyone got one that does?

I was tempted to reply and ask which one they were using but would probably have been modded!

I've had TuneIn Radio for a while now, and it's great. Didn't think you could transfer the recordings, though?

Whilst an iphone has a bigger screen I cant believe the quality and speed of my little samsung Smile

to be able to pop ones computer in your pocket or small handbag is just brilliant. Cant type as fast on it as I normally touch type but its a million types better than texting.

The speed it loads say a ytube video is quite remarkable! Now my old lap top seems slow Laughing

I can't believe how good this app is Smile

My only concern is when using it on data i.e. when out and about how much data will it use?! At home no problem because obviously using own Wifi connection to broadband.

Is it worth investing in mobile Wifi I wonder for the caravan?! They seem fairly new to the market so may be worth waiting a bit, the best deal seems to be with Orange at the moment (that is also my phone provider). Data amounts are more than the phone's mine is 500mb and I can see me easily using that up! Having said that a lot of sites have Wifi access either for a small charge or free so probably not.

Any thoughts anyone?

We (my wife and I) have 02 accounts for our phones and also for Broadband and although my 3G allocation is good for my iPhone my wife doesn't need it (doesn't have 3G data pn her Samsung phone) so instead she recently got a USB Dongle for 3G and WiFi. It's on PAYG and when we go away she just tops it up.

I have a friend who has a caravan on the north Norfolk coast and he's bought a cheap WiFi router for just the purpose you mention. He then uses it for his laptop and also his iPhone when he's there.

That said, a lot of network providers are now expanding their public WiFi coverage quickly so it depends on whether you'll be near a base station or not. I know that 02 is going to be expanding WiFi coverage this year in direct competition to BT, and they're all doing this to take the stress off 3G data networks so it will be interesting to see how it works out.

Thanks for all the info, I think as adnroids and iphones become more popular and with the developments you refer to the costs of data and mobile WiFi are going to come down do you?

Clearly the two main players in the Camping and Caravan industry offer quite good deals and with this in mind I wonder if we most of the time stay at one or the other's sites to use their services makes sense?

I think the Caravan club one offers excellent value don't you? At a £5 valid for 6 months across any of the sites? As we are already booked for 2 sites of theirs this year seems a good buy?

I notice on the caravan & camping club one it says restricted to one device how would that work if you had a mobile router I wonder? Do you know?

Sorry I know one of your pet hates is people towing caravans LOL but we are ok once we get there Wink
