Last week (I think), Ken Bruce said "Only on Radio 2 would you hear Lady Gaga and then Dawn."
Today Chris Tarrant said "Only on Radio 2 would you hear Boyzone and AC/DC on the same show"
The trouble is, Dawn were picked on Tracks Of My Years and AC/DC were picked on the oldies!!!!!!
Radio 2 picked Lady Gaga and Boyzone and I don't think they would dream of playing AC/DC or Dawn off their own bat.
All you get in the daytime now (mostly) are boy groups, new female singers and bland bands like Keane and The Script.
Come on Radio 2, there are millions of fantastic popular songs from throughout the decades and there must be some different new stuff being released!!!
I don't want obscure stuff, but you could play a great new easy listening song, or a song from a musical, or a new folk song (remember you did the awards?), a new jazz song, a new rock song, etc etc etc mixed in with the pop stuff
Why do all those genres have to be segregated and put into evening slots, after all Radio 2 is supposed to appeal to over 35s, and from my experience most over 35s love variety in their music. |

I agree with you up to a point Gaz but I have to take issue with your comment about Keane
In my opinion they are one of the most innovative artists of the last ten years not least because they are able to produce excellent music without the use of any guitars which makes them different from most musicians though as it happens not Lady Gaga who was formerly a classical keyboard player and who also shuns the use of guitars on her records
On your general point I don't really want to see tracks from musicals jazz or folk played on daytime Radio 2 but I would like to see a wider variety of tracks played by the artists who already feature
For example whenever a Bon Jovi track is played you can more or less guarantee it will be Living on a Prayer or with the Zutons it will be Valerie _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Totally agree. Nothing against Lady Gaga, Boyzone or even Keane. The beauty of being a grown-up (like Radio 2's target audience) is that I can appreciate lots of styles - so why don't Radio 2 give me more variety? |

Ruddles - I agree with you in respect of Keane. I think most people don't rate them very highly these days is that they base their judgement only on what the mainline radio stations play. Personally, I think they're a very, very good band.
Anyhow, I've almost given up on R2. We have that annoying woman on until 6.30am, then Mr. "Isn't Life Jolly Good Fun for us Millionaires you Suckers" Gobby Idiot on until 9.30am, and then Dippy Zoe.....etc etc. Utter crap, all of it!
Meanwhile, over on Radio Caroline we've had some great music (lots of old music, lots of new bands) this week presented by voices who don't think they're more important than the music........ |

I agree in general with that point but some genres are not so ridgid in the case of jazz it only starts become a problem when it really is for the purists and they start wandering off the tune and doing something obscure...many songs from musical shows do cross over to main stream music and many of what is called the American Song Book were featured on Broadway or in films. |

I appreciate a lot of what is played in the evenings but again you make a good point that I tend to agree with.
I am still discovering music from the last 5-6 decades by artists I have never heard before or keep hearing the same tracks played of those that are played regularly. |

I think the underlying message is a simple one: unless you're happy to hear the same tired old run-of-the-mill stuff then listen to something other than Radio 2.
It also applies to presenters - from early morning weekdays pretty much through to late in the day. Sadly, it's all much of a muchness. |

I didn't mean to pick on Keane specifically (although for some reason I just don't like them much), but they have been played to death over the last 5 years.
I don't have a problem with the majority of songs being poppy, just would like some occasional different types of songs to break things up a little bit.
Chris Evans (SORRY!!!), this morning played a jazzy cover of "Stepping Out" (I think) by Joe Jackson that he'd heard on Jamie Cullums show last night.
He loved it, some of the people with him didn't,
That is the kind of thing I mean though, even if you don't like the song at least it's a talking point or just something to break the playlist monotony.
I'd love Ken Bruce to say he'd been to a musical the night before and heard a great song, and then play it.
Or say he'd been listening to his Ipod and and listened to a great song he hadn't heard for years, and played that.
I t never happens though, it's always "Here's Enrique Iglesias" followed by "Here's Jennifer Lopez"

I agree with the comments on Keane. They are a good band, and Under The Iron Sea has some great songs on it. In fact, I think I'll play it now! |

I couldn't Disagree more about Keane, they are drab band similar to Coldplay and these days Snow Patrol, they are like the "indie music" 's equivalent to Enigma for dance music.
The real point is about the variation of the music played and I would agree with that, it does seem to be targetted at a very narrow audience ( I don't mean thin either) rather than the larger varied audience that we would all be part of. It's ok to hear on e or two songs that you don't like in an hour but all of them just makes you turn off _________________ You will hear gospel and rhythm and blues and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music. |

It does happen occasionally. Like I said in another thread, last week he made an off-the-cuff remark about the effects of baked beans and this prompted him to play the theme from Blazing Saddles (presumably displacing some 70s disco that had been lined up). More of this would be welcome. |

I bet 'Blazing Saddles' was on a few people's minds after Charlie Stayt broke wind in the studio on BBC Breakfast!
I always liked the bit with the convicts working on the railroad singing 'I Get A Kick Out Of You'! _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!

Well I have to say that I don't want to hear both on the same show,
and if the same show had Boyzone, AC/DC, Michael Buble, Katherine Jenkins, The Who, Bing Crosby, Lonnie Donegan and Lady Gaga on I still wouldn't listen, even Desmond would not put all of them together. I could just imagine thousands of folk switching off as each record started and by the end no-one would be listeneing
Radio 2 does get large audiences in the daytime playing a 'soft' mix, but I still think the station should be about providing shows for all the different audiences that exist, and hopefully the recent back-tracking on evening shows means it's getting back to that, in the evenings. _________________ -
