I have an American guy with me in the office as Ken is doing his thing on the radio. Earlier, Bobbi Prior announced that a broken-down "Dust Cart" was holding up traffic in the High Street of Higham Ferrers. My American friend asked "Is this Higham Ferrers place far from here?" to which I replied "Not really. It's in Northamptonshire, about 30 miles away."

"How far do your local radio stations reach?" was his next question.

"This isn't a local radio station - this is a national network station called BBC Radio 2".

"What? So people in the far north of Scotland and in the south-west of England get to hear about a truck screwing up traffic in a small town just up the road from here?"

How we laughed!

PS: He also asked the inevitable question: "What's a Dust Cart?"

Good for him, I've often said this myself as I see it as a very boring period hearing about road problems miles away! of no interest to the vast majority of listeners.
I mentioned it once on here and it didn't go down too well! Razz
There was a report of a road closure around the Yarmouth area a while back - big traffic hold-ups blah blah... it was hopelessly wrong anyway!

Dust Cart... good question! I can only assume it's a very old name from a time when dust and ashes would have been the main waste from households?
We didn't have all the packaging for food or anything really and what there was probably got burnt in the fireplace!
Here in Great Yarmouth, I remember Dustmen carrying the heavy bins on their heads! Laughing

That's definitely true, in my experience. In fact, last Friday night we were heading east on the A47 from Peterborough towards Guyhirn en route to King's Lynn and Hunstanton (where we have a holiday caravan) when a traffic report included a mention of a serious accident on the road ahead of us, leading to the complete closure of the A47 in both directions at Thornley. It was my wife who thought she heard mention of the A47 but we both completely missed the announcement amid a long list of others. The panic diversions of many vehicles added 60 minutes to our journey time!

What a waste of time - in more senses than one. Thank heavens for SatNav, though!

As a student in Plymouth in 1973, I did a Summer job working for Plymouth Corporation and worked for a while as a dustbinman - carry heavy bins on my shoulders. The bin-men these days have it easy! Smile
