I think it has already been said that both Radio 2 and 6 music have become too much like Radio 1, and there is nowhere for the previous generations of Radio 1 (those of the 1960s / 70s) listeners to migrate to. Commercial radio certainly isn't an option.

I don't know about.

Absolute Radio is very good-DJ Russ Williams plays a very diverse mix of music from the last 4 decades. Indeed the other DJ's on the station also play a very wide mix also when I have tuned in.

I think someone ought to tell them when to de-playlist tracks. The example that springs most readily to my mind is that one that goes 'Are we human or are we dancers? My vinyl's vital etc..' Blimey! Even Radio 2 stopped playing that one over a month ago!! Time they rested it for quite a few years I think!!

I don't understand that line about 'human or dancers.' Aren't dancers human? Myabe he misread it and it said 'human or androids?' Rolling Eyes

I really like that track. I don't care that the words "human" and "dancer" are in the same line!

It's not the lyrics. Just fed up of hearing it!! They have Absolute on at work and it seems that they don't know when to give some tracks a suitable period of rest. I remember last year they played that Plain White Ts track to death long after everyone else had stopped playing it.

When Virgin first started it was really good. I remember Richard Skinner (then on weekday mornings) playing tracks from Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell" as a worldwide pre-release exclusive and I though "I like this station". Sadly, Skinner got pushed aside and eventually Russ Williams took over the slot (after ending the breakfast run with Jono Coleman).

To be honest, I think the old Virgin Radio really started on a slide when Chris Evans appeared on the scene - first as breakfast presenter and then as owner - because the whole style changed.

I do like Russ Williams' broadcasting style, though; his musical knowledge is very good and he maintains a good balance between music and chat etc.

I do miss the "Russ & Jono" breakfast show, though; I stopped listening regularly to Virgin when Evans took over breakfast and trivialised it, and since the change of brand to "Absolute" I rarely listen at all. When I do listen in, it seems to be much of the same, day in day out.

The only national commercial station I listen to now is Planet Rock, which is at least owned by a group of musicians and not by some faceless corporation like G-CAP that doesn't care if it's producing radio or cornflakes!

Years ago they had virgin on at work, it would be about the time of 'Britpop', the Oasis vs Blur thing. As well as those two you would hear idiosyncracies like a track called 'The Mill Hill Self Hate Club', after a little bit of research it would seem to be by Edward Ball. If anyone asked Absolute to play it these days, I wonder if they would. I wonder if it still exists in their library / system! After several years break with the local ILR station as station of choice at work, they've gone back to Virgin / Absolute. It really isn't that different to what you'd hear on Radio 2 now, just with annoying commercials instead of Wright / Evans trailers!
I wonder who dares ask them to dig out that Edward Ball track!!

Colby, you are a poster after my own heart! I remember the old Virgin Radio with Richard Skinner, because he played Jane Siberry's 'Calling All Angels' and Jellyfish's 'Joining A Fan Club', from the 'When I Was A Boy' and 'Spilt Milk' albums.

Chris Evans ruined the station, I agree. I also remember them playing Marillion's 'Alone Again In The Lap Of Luxury' from the 'Brave' album. 1993 was a fair year for album buying in this house!
