The presenters on Radio Caroline last Saturday were chuckling at how they were getting a great air-check by Radio 2 by Brian Matthew on Saturday (26th) in celebration of the station came on air on Easter Sunday, March 26th 1964.

Happy birthday Radio Caroline - still one of the UK's best radio stations and, for most of the week, much better than boring old Radio 2!!!!

I heard it on Saturday morning and obviously it was only right and proper to mention it in the SOTS Chronicles because it was a great defining moment in the history of popular music

In any case I would guess Brian and probably Phil Swern would have a far greater rapport with Caroline than with the recent goings on on Radio 2
and at Brian's age I guess he can get away with it and probably doesn't give a toss anyway

Good on him and his producer for doing the right thing Very Happy

I'm looking forward to hearing this, in the past Brian always seemed a bit disparaging about the pirates!

That's because he worked for the same stuffy monopolistic broadcasting organisation claimed by Ronan O'Rahilly to stifle new music and listener choice before Easter 1964!

It's funny really, given that Brian's broadcasting career benefitted hugely from the explosion of new music and creativity in the 60s - much of which was promoted by the pirates. The decade would have been a lot different were it not for the pirates.

It got a mention on Keith Skues show on Radio Norfolk the previous week (20th Mar) which I listened to over the weekend. He's a bit eccentric but plays some good tracks. His contract was supposed to end at the end of this month but he said it's been renewed for another year.

It's another of those 'listen while you still can' whenever I remember that is!

I'm not surprised that Skuesy mentioned it, given the fact that he's an ex-BigL jock. I'm pleased his contract has been extended. His show was recently stripped across all the stations in the BBC East region and I listened now and then. I don't know if they still are.

Yes I know he was a Pirate jockey! The show still seems to be on several BBC East stations as well.

I've been listening to Nigel Harris on Radio Caroline as I sit at my desk kidding myself that I'm working efficiently this afternoon and I have to say that it's been an excellent source of listening this afternoon. He's a presenter I remember from his days on the Mi Amigo ship and his presentation style is just what radio 2 lacks - he's bright, cheerful, plays a very good mix of music and is also knowledgeable about the music he plays. What's also encouraging is that there's none of silly gimmickry you get in so many mainstream radio programmes these days - especially at weekday breakfast, afternoons, etc etc.

Moreover, his broadcasting style is every bit as good (if not much better) than many of Radio 2's current roster of presenters and in my view he's just the kind of presenter R2 needs.

That said, I'd much rather he stayed where he is because I do think Radio 2 is now a lost cause under Mr. Shennan's stewardship - and I prefer listening to Caroline anyhow. Radio 2 now leaves me cold, whereas Caroline is kind of "warm and cosy".

Colin, I'm confused. Today on Caroline is a different line up to yesterday- do any of them do a regular show Mon-Fri?

Hmm. Spin Doctors' Two Princes - they played that yesterday afternoon as well.

It's all right, just lacks variety and is nothing like its namesake of yore. And the "warm and cosy" description makes me want to throw you a pipe and slippers.

I'm impressed with the professional style of presentation even though as you say these people are all volunteers

Listened to Nigel Harris and thoroughly enjoyed the show

Didn't care much for the Elvis show yesterday but Martin Fisher who is on now seems very competent

Whilst I will still listen to Smooth breakfast and probably Ken Bruce on Radio 2 I certainly think Caroline could be a good choice for weekday afternoons

The only problem is that I don't get much done whilst I'm listening because the music is really good

Never mind. Presenters have a free hand in what they play so it's gonna happen. At least the repetitiveness isn't at Radio 2 levels.

I think Nigel's show this afternoon was very good - certainly by R2 standards - and contained a level of variety that satisfied me. He played some good stuff and the whole thing moved along very nicely, I thought. It just shows the extent to which R2 presenters really are bogged down in the quagmire these days.

The "warm and cosy" was my little joke, by the way. Smile

Most of them are. I think the weekday daytime presenters are paid.

That's my problem as well!
