There has been much written here about the phone hacking.
Watching the BBC news programmes there is a certain Robert Peston who comments on Business News for the BBC. He is the guy comics take the 'p' out off as he stretches his words and really can't do a good interview without spluttering and hesitating
What I would like to ask is.......
Is this a fit person to be commenting on the BBC news?
He has been pictured rubbing shoulders with the Murdoch clan.
He looked very nervous on the news last night (Sunday) Has no one at the BBC noticed that he just may be a little baise towards this family.
I feel uncomfortable watching this guy. He cannot speak a full sentance without stretching his words.
Worth an investigation to his motives I feel _________________ I like hedgehog crisps

Blondehedgehog:
Robert Peston! Not to be confused with lovely Robert Preston of such gems as “Ya Got Trouble My Friends” and “I Won't Send Roses” etc etc. |

I actually heard him speaking perfectly normally on a piece last night, in fact he was speaking so fast it was hard to believe it was him! It wasn't to camera though...............

Helen , he spoke quite well when covering a film about the hacking, but when he was interviewed he just could not face camera. He just kept looking at the news reader. he has never been that 'coy' before
I felt there was something not quite right......................

Very irritating manner. Seems to have got worse lately, as if he is deliberately s-p-e-a-k-i-n-g v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y to draw attention to himself. Have started watching ITV News instead, their reporters are less annoying! _________________ MiS |

You'll doubt get Laura Kuenssberg shortly as she's defecting there soon.

I don't trust ITN when it comes to the news
I know some of the things their reporters get up to and believe me they are almost as bad as Murdoch's lot
I'm not saying the BBC is perfect but they are definitely the least worst _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I know what you mean but I find Huw Edwards and Peston so irritating that sometimes it has to be ITV News! _________________ MiS |

Channel 4 News even though it is produced by ITN is a great deal better than the ITV 1 offering
I guess it's a bit like the difference between the Times and the Sun _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Well if he is speaking on screen surely he NEEDS to draw attention to 'himself', that is, allow you to hear what he's saying
I learned through experience at work to speak slowly when talking in public, at business meetings, recording messages etc, partly because of my accent and partly because people DO listen better. Talk too quickly and it's over their heads or in one ear... etc.
Weather men/girls for example, when they talk too quickly I stop listening, and at the end I find myself saying 'so what was the weather then, will it rain? and I don't know. _________________ -

No need for the John, I defy anyone not to find his style of speaking frustrating and affected. Nothing wrong at all with clear diction and speaking so that you can be understood, but his delivery is just plain daft! _________________ MiS |

He seems to have a good brain and is very knowledgeable. I've read recently that he suffers from a stammer so I presume his manner of speaking is his way of trying to overcome that.
It's a shame because it detracts from what he is saying sometimes. Perhaps he should stick to written articles. |

But he's a very intelligent man, decades in top jobs, so his 'daft' delivery has a reason behind it - it's not daft, I don't know about any stammer, but previously a 'print' man I think he still has a nervous approach to the camera/studio and is constantly struggling to cope with it.
He has just turned 50 or maybe 51 now, and I've noticed a rather sudden ageing in his appearance, or maybe he's just stopped having studio make-up. _________________ -

Excerpt from an article on the website “This is Devon” in January 2011 about a speech therapist and “The King's Speech”:
“High-profile figures today can, with the appropriate support, manage their stammer and be successful. Rowan Atkinson, Gareth Gates and Emily Blunt are examples in the entertainment industry.
There are also high-profile individuals who stammer in the business world. The BBC's business editor, Robert Peston, often heard on Radio 4's Today programme, is a good example.”
I have also seen mention of his stammer in the Daily Telegraph fairly recently. |

Thanks Eileen, very courageuos of Robert Peston to take on a radio/TV job.
Apparently he got the scoop on Northern Rock, but has also been accused of insider activity, or inappropriate leak of a take-over somewhere. _________________ -

Insider.......... thats why I started this thread. His photo was taken rubbing shoulders with the Murdochs at one of their parties.
More focus has been put on his speach in this thread. I was wondering if he gets his info' by having feet well and truly under the Murdoch table.
With respect of speach ...the BBC employ a lot of reporters (especially Midlands to-day) who have some sort of speach defect.... With the number of people living in the Midlands I dont't understand why they can't employ people who can talk properly
Rant over....................... _________________ I like hedgehog crisps |

Unfortunately Hedgehog I think that's down to political corectness gone mad and the effects of the Disability Discrimination Act the effect of which, whilst well intended, is not always very helpful _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Re:'Ya Got Trouble My Friends' - I remember the Ronnie Barker parody of this where he was a priest speaking from the pulpit, and it ends up with him going to Hell!
The Simpsons also parodied this in the episode 'Marge Vs The Monorail'.
Re:Rowan Atkinson - his very unique pronunciation of 'Bob' in the Blackadder episodes where Gabrielle Glaister appeared came about because he didn't want to stutter on camera. _________________ We are loonies and we are proud!
