Now that I work from home, I'm hearing this more often than I used to and am getting hooked on it. There's a good diversity of guests and some memorable tracks. In particular, whilst I'm not Nigel Kennedy's biggest fan, I'm right with him re appreciating pop as well as jazz and the classics. And I like the Girls Aloud one, too!

Ian.

Well it certainly gives us a change from the Gary Bones 'Tracks of my Years' which are generally very mediocre and occupy the rest of the show Sad

Tracks Of My Years is always interesting and enjoyable. As I've said before, it's better than the dismal rubbish that comprises the rest of the show.
The sooner they get rid of Gary Bones the better.

In my opinion, Gary Bones represents everything that is wrong musically with Radio 2.
He treats the Ken Bruce show as a chance to play his favourite records over and over again.
Yet again today its ColdPlay, Scissor Sisters, George Michael etc etc.
Mainly the only times you'll hear anything slightly different is coming up to 10am where they have a couple of minutes to fill (so you just might get a sixties song if you're lucky), the love song and the song after popmaster.
Virtually all the rest is nineties or noughties stuff played over and over like a third rate commercial station

The love song mainly has variety, but there does seem to a small roster of "long songs" (all of which elicit the same audience comments about going to the loo or suchlike), and the filler up to the news is hugely annoying. I mean, the Rah Band might be ok once in a while but every other day? Give over.

Yes, it's a great shame Bones is the guiding musical light on the station. I'm sure things were much more exciting ten years ago.

At risk of going somewhat off topic, I'll agree that ten years ago things were infinitely better on Radio 2 than nowadays. It was the pre-Douglas era (yes, I know she was in the background, but she wasn't at the helm) when most of the presenters were actual DJ's as opposed to TV personalities playing at being DJs like we get these days. These real DJs weren't required to have a sidekick and they mostly talked to you rather than shouted at you (Wrighty is the only one I can think of that bellowed and consequently I soon stopped listening to him) There was more variety in the music heard, even in the midweek daytime shows, you didn't have to rely on the speciality shows to hear something a bit different. I had Radio 2 on just about all day Mon-Sat (Well I did when I was on holiday!) How times have changed. Sadly not for the better! IMO of course.

I feel desperately sorry for Ken in that at this stage of his career he should be doing so much better for himself.

Instead, he has Gary Bones knocking out his guilty pleasures on his show on a daily basis. Does anyone here really think that "Going Loco In Acapulco" or "The Only Way Is Up" are right there at the top of the list of Ken's favourite tunes? No I doubt it either so why is it that you will hear these two songs opening the show (amongst others) more often than you will hear them on any other radio show.
